Line level multi-effect suggestions

My GB ShuttleMax 12.0 is currently making its way across the atlantic and already I am thinking about effects units to go with it

Ideally I'd like a multi-effects unit that can plug into any one of the three effects loops To do this I think they need to have a line level output

So, please let's have your suggestions

Nearly every rack effect is line level or has the option to be line level. Is that what you have in mind? I wouldn't want to run cables from my stompboxes to my amp and back

I'd actually rather prefer smallish stompbox type multi-effects, as it will be easier to carry around - but far less of these have the line-out option

They don't need it- the line level effects loops are a good thing if you have effects that need it, but there's not much benefit to using it with effects that aren't designed to need it.

But the reason I want to use it is to have effects on one channel (clean) that I can mix with the other non-effected channel (tube). Just provides more flexibility than going bass>stomp>instrument in which would apply effects to both channels. Hope this makes sense...

If there aren't any multi-effects stomps out there with line-level out then I may need to reconsider

Most if not all multi-effect units are line level out. I can't think of one that isn't right now. Input may be more of a concern since line level at the input is likely to make it distort.
I see no benefit to doing this but it may just be me.

So, does that mean that there is no disadvantage to plugging a stompbox with an instrument level out into an effects loop designed for line level?

If so, I'm worrying over nothing... but thought I'd read something about it adding noise??

Time-based effects like delay can sound cleaner in a loop as they won't be going through your amp's preamp section first, but even that's negligible in most cases. All other effects generally go in front, and if you're already getting something in stompbox format, then the designers probably took into account that you'll be running it in front of your amp.

The manual for my Boss ME-50B shows it being used between the bass and the amp, but I use it in my amp's effects loop (which is post-EQ) and like it better that way. Your mileage may vary.
