I guess it's better to have people actually playing then just posting on forums. I'm a big fan of Rush and after spending wasted hours on Tabs and learning covers have gone back to just playing. It's out of tune and I'm sure in the future it won't be.
No, I haven't had too much of a tuning issue (independent of intonation) since that series of videos was posted (6 months ago). Of my more recent vids, perhaps my "Riddles are Abound Tonight" vid is a little out on the G-string, but that is because I had been tugging on that string for an hour without re-adjusting it. That tune is brutal on a G-string.
And playing is always preferable to yapping, in my opinion. Everyone on this forum should be doing videos for youtube if possible....the bass player community there is very friendly and supportive, and we would be sure to welcome any newcomers of all skill levels. It's a great way to have an audience, as well. I can get up in the morning, shoot a video, and by the end of the day 150 people have seen it. Heck, I couldn't get that kind of exposure on a daily basis when I was playing in bands.
If a sometimes out-of-tune, overplaying slammer with bad intonation like me has 450 subscribers. What would a true master have?
Tabs....meh....I never had the patience for them and still cannot read them worth a darn. I study for a living, so the last thing I want to do is "study" when it comes to playing. Playing is emotional for me....purely emotional. If I "studied" it, I am afraid that I would lose that emotional connection to the music. It might mean a few bad notes when playing unsupervised, but in the scheme of things, my playing has greatly benefitted from not knowing what I am doing.

Well, I've seen 'em now. So you have two basses.....one J and one P? Nice stuff you have there...very tasteful (something I lack is taste). It is not easy to just sit there with a beat and start making stuff up. A nice, solid approach to striking the strings, as well.

I'm gonna call it "French Fried Potaters"....I already ripped a bunch of quotes from Carl Childers (from "Slingblade") to use in it, but I haven't started writing yet....something about that blank drum beat always hangs me up.

+1 I thought it sounded weird but I didn't wanna say anything and be ripped apart! I don't listen to much Rush but hes a pretty good player, just needs to tune that nice Ric of his up.
Rob, glad you made it to the site. I posted your video because I thought you had great tone and I loved how you put your own spin on RUSH and Maiden tunes. Hell, we all hit bad notes from time to time right?

it's fun to post pics and stuff but its more fun to make a friend that you can learn from and someday might sell you his Red Rik.No offense taken on the posting, Bob. I would not have known about this thread except a friend of mine from youtube ran across it yesterday morning and alerted me. "Sickmick"....an excellent player in his own right....check out his "Orion" solo if you get the time.
And I don't mind the criticism. There is nothing anyone says on this thread that I have not heard before, and in harsher terms. I long ago shed that insecure part of me that makes me lash out at other musicans over minutia and makes me fear the criticism of others. Youtube will do that for you, and it has been liberating to not have to cover my Achilles heel all of the time.
And I love hearing other musicians' "takes" on tunes. If I want to see Steve Harris play a tune, I'll watch him, but if I want to see how someone else expresses themselves through a song, I'll do that as well. In all honesty, I learn more from watching people play it differently than watching the original. There are just so many ways of expressing oneself in a Maiden tune!
From my experience, Geddy's fans are the worst bass fans on youtube...always demanding EXACT replication or they will try to bully you to death and whine loudly about every little deviation. Somehow I think Geddy would not approve of his music being used as a vehicle to denigrate others. It's music, not brain surgery. But that's my opinion.

I agree with the sentiment, though I may not have expressed it quite like that.
Maybe I'm just an old cynic, but I always take comments people make about other people's playing with several hundredweight of salt unless I've seen them post something of their own for scrutiny. I'd like to see much more posting of sound and video on TB.

I totally agree, only Geddy sounds like Geddy. I am a cheap fascimile that takes his own indulgences and have no illusions to hold my skills up to any master, Geddy or otherwise.
This is why the youtube community is very supportive and encouraging. All of our butts are out there for everyone to see....warts and all.
Agreed. I liked watching ya. New World Man is one of my favorite lines to play (on my own, not with others
) I never try to copy someone else's line EXACTLY (because A-I probably can't and B- why do EXACTLY what someone else did? Unless you are in a Tribute band... Even Geddy doesn't do Geddy EXACTLY every timem though by definition, I suppose Geddy DOES Geddy every time, but I digress...) but try to get a reasonable facsimile with a tone I like. I actually like playing New World Man on my Epi Viola (ducks items thrown by the purists), though it does not match Geddy's tone. Make it your own, man.The "not with others" comment is interesting. My guitarist was not that familiar with Rush
but has done some listening since we got started together. When we started out, we were looking at doing Classic rock coversand were looking at stuff like Brown Eyed Girl, and a Feedback style Summertime Blues (I was pumped and ready to go on THAT one!), but we have made a switch to more Christian rock covers/originals, and I think that has focused us as a band more... So really, I do not play Rush with others because that ain't what we are doing (aside from the fact that I don't have the chops to play most of his stuff yet...). And that's cool enough. Maybe later once we get our stuff together we will fool around with other stuff, or maybe I will get involved in other bands, but learning our set list is about all I can handle now...
