Little Big Muff.

Okay, well I bought one of these and I can get great sounds out of it when I'm playing by myself and whatever.

But when it comes to a band situation I can't get the same ones, and it is almost always too fuzzy, even when i turn the sustain off completely.

The sound(s) I'm looking for is/are Chirs Wolstenholme's Fuzzy sound, Timmy C's and something like the bass from little sister or chelsea dagger.

Help please? :confused:

This is actually a common problem with the Muff (and most other fuzzes). The LBM and NYC Muff are both very smooth fuzzes with a mid-scooped sound. Since your mids are what give you presence in a mix, the Muff makes you disappear.

Try looking into a less smooth fuzz, like one of the Sovtek (preferably an older green model) Big Muffs or even a Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard fuzz, which is a Muff clone with more clean signal blended into your tone.

However, if you're REALLY stuck on the tone of your LBM, you could just try a clean blend pedal. It'll let the natural sound of your bass cut through the mix better (with all of your mids intact).

This is not really a helpful comment here so much, but the best thing I ever did for my Big Muff was to play through a tube amp. I had an SVT 3 Pro and when I'd kick on the Muff all I could hear was low end that didn't really sound distorted and high end that got lost amongst the guitars. I recently got an early 70's Ampeg V4B and the Muff sounds so much better through it. I can actually hear my distorted bass now. The lows are still there, the high end is not as harsh, and the midrange is fuller and richer.

I used a pretty big jump above unity volume when I stomp my LBM. Not only can I hear my bass through the mix, but I can feel the hair on my arms dance.

As Spanky noted, the LBM is a bit mid-scooped. Make sure your amp isn't set with mid-scooped EQ also or you will be fighting a no-win battle.

I'm using a HAO Roar now, but they are a little hard to find. One thing that does work sometimes is a a EQ pedal after the muff or cranking your lowmids on your amp, but the problem with that is you either have to like a mid heavy sound all the time at adjust your amp all the time, hence the EQ, but then if you don't have your pedals in a switchable loop you have to turn them on one at a time. So I'd get a blendable loop if it was me, and I did; one cool thing about the blended sound is it is just bigger, it sounds like you are using two amps when using Fuzz or OD and no hassles with EQing and everything is more under your control. Oh also a comp after a bigmuff can make it more focused too.

I actually don't have one that I'm using right now, but Salty_Beans is starting to make custom blend pedals, which is exactly what someone like me needs. So I'll be blending of the Beans variety. ;-D

You can also check out Barge Concepts VFB-2 (and soon their VFB-X and Mini VB), Radial BIG SHOT Mix, Xotic Xblender, the new Morley clean blend expression pedal, or any others that you can find.

Blend, my friend, blend.

Both of the cats you mention use parallel clean & effected signals. You can do it on the cheap with a Boss LS-2, running in A-B Mix, the fx in loop A and nothing (not even a patch lead) in B.

MAN! The Morley FXB (FX Blender) is just what Im looking for... :eek:

Im waiting for the VFB-X from barge.. but this is actually the functionality im realy after.. :hyper: And in the end.. less cash than the VFB-X + exp pedal(s)..

Anyone tried one of these??
