Always have a few picks on top of the amp as well, & some backup spares in that little pocket in your jeans.

Tuning to the Mains

In the UK the electricity supply is 50Hz, in the US it's 60 Hz. Finding something with mains hum isn't usually very hard.

Bottom G is 49Hz, Bb is 58.27Hz & B is 61.74Hz... so... if you're in the UK, tune your G a tad sharp & in the US you have a choice - sharpen your Bb a touch or flatten your B a bit. Close enough for Rock 'n' Roll.

WD-40 works like a dream for getting stickers and that yucky duct tape residue from your budget pick holder off your bass. But I have not personally tried this on nice wood finishes, so test it first (then again if you put stickers on a nice wood grain finish, you are a ___). I learned this from my communications class where someone gave a riveting speech about the virtues of WD-40 and used it to get decals off their windshield.

And if your stripped strap button hole is too big for a toothpick, I have whittled down a chopstick with an x-acto knife to just the right size and shoved it in there with some wood glue and never had to fix it since.

If you play with a plectrum than tic-tac boxes are a decent place to store spares. It keeps them all together without them vanishing off to the bottom of your gig bag.

If you don't have wire cutters for your strings then cheap nail clippers will do the job at a pinch.

Another idea if you use plectrums is to wrap the top in blu-tack. It gives a better grip on the plec and as a bonus you can stick the plec to the body of the guitar if you switch to different picking styles.

Tippex (liquid paper or correction fluid) can be useful for putting reference dots on things as it's white it'll show up better in low lights.
