Living Colour on NPR Tiny Desk

I hope that they won't cancel NPRs budget for Black History month. I will probably break my fingers as I cross them hard, Thanks. I've seen them first in small clubs in NYC before Doug came in . Muzz played Salsa as well and many styles. Maybe he was more of a session than a band member. Forgot how it all went,

I guess no room for Doug's pedalboard? He did bring 3 basses

Man, Corey sounds amazing!
I went to a LC show about a year and a half ago. It was in a small theater, and the sound was almost perfect - not quite enough guitar, if you can believe that. Walking out into the lobby between bands (they were openers), all you heard was people marveling at how good Corey sounded.

Then Extreme played, and it sounded worse than any other professionally mixed show I’ve ever heard. Fortunately I was just there for Living Colour, and I more than got my money’s worth. From where I was sitting, Doug was the star of the show anyway.

It was Muzz. As highly as I think about Wimbish, I really liked Muzz more. I think that guy got out of music. Shame, he was a great player and loved his lines.
Wasn't Muzz Skillings the original bassist?? I can't remember anymore. :(
Guys, I think it's almost 3 or more decades since Doug arrived. He is fit for this band and compliments Vernon very well specially all the effects and edgy playing. If you see them live, you'll get what I mean. I am a fan of the so called "Metal Wanking" of Vernon.

I don't get what you mean. Are you thinking I haven't heard any of their content with Doug over the last 3 decades or that I am just wrong for liking Muzz more?

They are in fact cancelling/rescinding the npr budget, and while many major cities will keep service (it's just 4% at wgbh Boston) rural stations nation wide will no longer afford national programming, just the local programs, farm or fishing report and weather, maybe a book club or other locally produced programs.

Absolutely love the band....four of my favorite people in music. Couldn't get enough of them on MTV in the '80s, loved the albums, and am thrilled that Corey has retained his excellent voice and range (and that the other three are still top-level, unparalleled players). Each one is extremely unique, genre-defining, technically proficient and immensely creative and they come together brilliantly. Have seen them live recently, but was fortunately enough to see them in the late spring of '93 with Bad Brains opening (The American Theater in St. Louis...first row, dead-center) and it was one of the great live experience of my life. If you haven't seen the band live, find them and see them in your area.

This is also a fun drill....find a young-ish person and ask them if they know who "Living Colour" is. They'll say no (or the maybe reference the TV show). Then play them Cult of Personality backed by Open Letter (To A Landlord), watch their faces melt and then exclaim "How do I NOT know about this band?!?!". Truly one of the top candidates for a great band with lots of success that "should have been bigger".

Great performance and thanks for posting - Doug, Will, Vernon, Corey (and Muzz) are the best.

Ironically, I finally heard the whole concert this evening. Corey Glover sounds just like it is still 1989. Dude must be living well. Vernon Reid is still painfully earnest. Reid and Robert Frip must be brothers from different mothers. It was a joy to watch and listen to Doug Wimbish. He is a true master of his craft, plus it was cool to see him play what may be his original Spector because it definitely has some wear and tear on it. Will Calhoun was holding it down like pro he is. The audience really reacted positively and were clearly familiar with the material. This was one of the best Tiny Desk Concerts I have seen.

IMO still one of those seriously underrated bands that should have blown up HUGE in the late 80's/early-mid 90's even without their cult of personality hit song. Their Stain album is personally one of my favorites of all time that even pushed me further into exploring bass guitar. Wimbish is just amazing and they all sound so together and tight whenever I hear them live. Great band, great musicians.

I think they are going to lose all federal funding. That just means we listeners need to donate. I think NPR and PBS will be fine.

Follow. For Now with David Ryan Harris was another one of those bands.
