Local Bass wanted post

I saw this on my local musicians FB page. It looked interesting to me but I as I read through something seemed off.

Anyone else see issue with this post?

-----------------------
The xxxx yyyy Band is looking for a new bass player! Yep, our great friend and xxx original, Zzz, has decided to retire at the end of this year. We wish him all the best for sure!!
Our ideal candidate will be an accomplished bassist and fit most or all of these criteria:
- local to Jax or the Jax Beaches area or willing to travel from surrounding areas
- owns enough equipment to project their sound to fill a small hall or bigger
- NO DRAMA. We are all easy going and we're in this for the fun
- available for 3 to 4 gigs a month, possibly more depending on demand, and rehearsals on some mid-week evenings. Some rehearsals will be at a home studio near St.Aug.
- understand that some of our gigs are for charity and will be just for tips. Potentially one per month.
- backup vocals/harmonies are a plus. Opportunities for lead vocals too on occasion
- songwriting is a plus as well, but at least have an interest in helping to create some original music
- able to hit the ground running in January 2026
Interested parties can email [email protected] or hit me up in Messenger.
We look forward to meeting and jamming with our new band member!
If you read this far and think you know someone who would fit well, feel free to share!!
Thanks!

I'll start

- owns enough equipment to project their sound to fill a small hall or bigger

I own plenty of equipment and I have an assortment of 4x10 and 2x12 cabs with 800 watts of a
Mesa WD head to drive them. But If the band is sucessful enough to play a hall larger than small wouldn't there be PA support?

Is it just me, maybe I'm just getting too old and cranky. :bassist:

I see nothing wrong with the post. They want to make sure someone doesn’t show up with only a practice amp that won’t be able to carry the room. Maybe they don’t have a very robust PA and only run vocals through it.
It sounds like you have the equipment to pull off the job, but are maybe too cranky for the “no drama” part of the requirements.

You may be right ;)

If I were looking for a band with that criteria, I would probably reach out based on that ad. They addressed a lot of things up front. Now, if I were looking for a high paying gig, I would look elsewhere. But, it does seem that they all get along, they are organized and love music. It seems like a good non-professional situation for the right person, with the opportunity to play some gigs and pick up some extra cash. They don't seem to be full time professional musicians, but much better than 'let's drink some beers and maybe play some music if we're sober enough.'

+1

I do think it is a well written ad.
They tried to address everything beforehand that might lead to problems later on - heck, they even focused so much on the organisation thing that they forgot to mention what music they play.
+1

I totally agree: they make it clear it is not a match for someone wanting to make money playing music.
If I read between the lines, this is probably one of these gigs where "breaking even" would be the aspiration.

Nothing wrong with this and I totally appreciate being upfront about it.

This could be a very pleasant experience, providing that:
  • You enjoy the music they play (for instance, I would not)
  • They are a good hang - to find this you need to meet them
Let us know in case you should decide to meet them....

RE FOH:

I played in a band where BL refused to put the bass in the mix. I asked him how he expected me to have the right level in the house? He replied, “I don’t know. That’s your problem.” My tenure in the band was brief. But dang, they had a great song list that was a blast to play and paid pretty well. At the time I was in another band with much better players and working 50+ hours a week on a road warrior type job.

Want to borrow my PJB Nano for the audition? ;)

I think it’s a good ad. If it were me, I’d say that I honestly don’t own the kind of amp I’d want to use for a band like that, but if this works out for all of us (myself included), then I’m able to buy a rig. I’ve had several in the past with different bands and know what’s required…. But you’ve got the stuff from the sounds of it.

You're getting old and cranky. You have the gear you need, so why worry.

If they are providing their own PA system, it may be that they just don't want to run the bass through it for fear of damaging their speakers. Some venues are like that too. I've run into that a few times. I don't worry about it because with my 800-watt Eden head bridged into my DNS-410 cab by DNA (handles 1400-watts rms), I get told to turn down at wide open Music Festivals if I turn my master up to 10:30. Word was that it messed up the balance of their sound because I'm louder than their FOH if I turn my master above 10:15.

Your Mesa WD800 with your 410+212 would be more enough to do that too. That should be more than enough for just about anything. So don't worry about. Just check them out and see if you like playing music with them...and don't be so cranky. 🤣😂:bassist:
