Long Excursion HiFi Woofer in my Crate Amp

That fisher 12" driver may function "ok" for you in that small combo cab. That small closed volume will raise the resonance frequency of the whole system which will protect the fisher a bit for overexcursion. Also, the whole system will have a high "Q", in other words you'll most likely get a small bump in mid/bass region (I don't know the specs of the fisher driver and the cabs volume so I can't simulate the response) this will make it somehow sound "fuller". About lacking of the mids, the fisher driver will probably have a breakup resonance somewhere between 1 and 2khz this will give you a bit of "definition" (not real definition, but it will enhance the attack a bit).

About testing the excursion, you just can't determine the "real" excursion the way you showed in that video. There's a whole lot more to it.

elroyjetsn, the most import thing is that you are happy with your sound and it doesn't overextend your budget. I admit, I'm very frugal, but sometimes it costs you 2 or 3 times as much in the end when you buy a few cheap things that don't last or work and then you finally go for quality and end up happy with your sound but broke in your wallet. I too have a Crate BT1000 and I love it...however, it just took a crap on me this last week at practice after acting up a little by hissing when I turn it on and not having any sound come through. I too replaced the driver in my combo amp and listened to billfitzmaurice's recommendation of a Eminence Beta 12A and I have no regrets at all (thanks again bill!) The driver compliments the cabinet and the sound is a million times better than the factory piece of crap that was in there. elroyjetsn, if your current driver fails or you change your mind about it, I highly recommend trying the Eminence Beta 12A driver. I just need to get my amp fixed up because I use it a lot and I miss it already. It is something electrical that is wrong but I don't know what. Capacitor or something maybe. Enjoy your amp and your sound!

At the time I didn't know Eminence had a more reasonably priced 12" bass speaker like the Beta 12A, cause the basslites are quite a bit more. Idealy I'd wish that there were better 4 ohm options out there.

Hope you get to the bottom of that squeal issue. A bandmate's Marshall guitar combo was making similar noise and I found some weak traces on one of the boards. Beefed them up and it's been OK.

You're ignoring port air velocity. Your cab will go chuff, chuff, chuff when the cone gets moving and the air in that little tube can't keep up. Model it with the full power signal your amp has to give....and then some to allow for turning up the bass knob if needed.


I don't doubt this thing probably sounds better than what the Crate came with but +1 to all about using hifi woofers in bass cabs. Your bass signal has many power spikes, etc. where recorded music rarely deviates by more than 3db. All that lowend extension also comes at the price of sensitivity. Keep an eye on the foam surround and don't forget about the spider on the back side either. Try and find an xlim spec on that thing and calculate your safety margin.

I stuck with the existing 3" diameter rear port since the it gave me pretty nice results. The surround looks like a rubber coated cloth material. So, shouldn't have that crumbling foam issue common with many HIFI woofers I've seen. I will keep an eye on the spider for any issues.

bump...

Been almost 2 years now since I put the Foster HIFI woofer and the 3 inch ferrofluid tweeter in my Crate BT1000 Kickback, and even though at 8 ohms it's a little quieter, the tone is just to my liking and it really gives smoothness and clarity to my B string that wasn't there with the OEM driver. I've driven it hard many times for hours at time with no complaints from the amp or the speakers. The tone is way superior to that from my Acoustic B100 with the 15 and sealed box. Both are rated at 100 watts, and the B100 is twice as loud (at least) but the sound is very thin and boomy.
