Double Bass Long term, amplifier investment

Is this the one you use? Powered version?

http://masoundworks.com/manage.numo?pid=27&module=shopping_cart&component=catalog&cid=1

It would accept the Line Out from my WW amp? Or the non-powered version could be driven by my 150W Woods?

Intriguing.

Thanks.

Stu,

Yes, that is the 18 I own. However in the last six months Mike, the owner, has redesign the internals considerably.

I suggest giving him a call or email and let him know your needs. He will then build you exactly what you need.

On the ocassion where I've used my Walter Woods Ultra with a MAS 4x5 it worked beautifully. I have not tried to use it as a pre amplifier for

my powered MAS 1/8

I’ve been trying out a number of class D power amps and powered speakers the past few years—Jule Potter’s M700 and M2500, RAD Engineering 1000P, the power section of a bridged stereo WW (about 18 years old), and a Bergantino IP112ER. Various preamps, various speaker cab combinations.

For my application the WW still outperforms them all.

Thank you all for wonderful comments and insight. The knowledge and experience from you folks is priceless.

AI tone is clinically clear. WW tone is musical.

A friend of mine uses a MPP-1, and he’s verified the value of a “musical” preamp. Also, I’ve seen Michael Arnopol describe his designs and I’m blown away. Paring a preamp with a MAS cabinet seems to be the way to go. It’s not what I thought I was looking for, and that feels good.

There is truth in the WW vs. AI comment, it even makes sense if you replace WW with GK. However, I have found the "musical" in my AI set up, it is in there, and you actually have a bit more choice in the matter.
For all the talk about MBOL, a lot of us want a nice "amp sound" when using an amp. I have a big acoustic sound and I like to move between acoustic and amplified playing using a volume pedal.
I am able to get a range of nice amp sounds from my older Clarus.
It is great to live in time with several great choices, however, I would argue that "clinically pure" is just a starting point, and a great place to start, and not a strike against AI!

Even though I have a preamp, I got the EA doubler over the AI Clarus because it has a notch filter and necessary when micing the DB. My preamp has a notch filter also but in case it died then the EA can take over.

EA also sounds great with an BG also and even though it has a 3 band EQ only, it is very musical and to me has a better input gain control. I did not even think it mattered. AI has more features though for upright . I wish they brought back the notch filter they had on earlier series.

The best manual writer and a company that helps its users in understanding EQ is actually Mesa Boogie and worth to check out. If you do not use any mic and have a buffer, I would just get the D800+ or the new WD800. Their EQ design is well thought of and gives great result with the rest of the mix. Historically they make durable amps. The D-class amps should be no exception. I do not really believe in MBOL. The moment you amplify your bass, you have EQ'ed it unless you are in an iso booth. Some know this and play with plexiglass etc. Some use amplification to their advantage Avishai Cohen and Chris Woods come too mind playing Ampeg SVTs with the double bass.

Your dealer is even more crucial. Go Golihur if you will get AI or EA.

When I saw and spoke with John Patitucci earlier this year he was using a Aguilar Tonehammer 500 and Aguilar 4x10”cab for electric and upright.
He was using a Felix Pre amp to run a signal from his bassmounted mic to FOH.

I like the EA Doubler and (2) Aguilar SL112 cabs as a doubling rig and it has simplified my gear tremendously as I sold off everything else
Powerful, light, tons of whistles and bells.

The problem today with the “long term” amp invest, that the current D-class amps, very problematic to repair, since the lot of miniature and glued together components, mostly If the model discontinued by the manufacturer....For example Aguilar don’t send circuit diagram for discontinued models......My old amps was very easy to repair.....
