Looking at used basses is just so depressing lately...

:bassist:
Before I speak, no offense to my TB people. Its just so sad whats happening with USED pricing nowadays. I dont want this to get political please but I am just so discouraged with what the used pricing has turned into. So many examples to cite but:
800-900 for a US Fender P or J, now 1200-1800.
200-300 for a Squier CV p or J, now 500-600.
1800-2500 for an Alembic Spoiler, now...no comment.
2200-2800 for an XL/L2, now 3800-5k
1200-1400 for a Spector Euro 4, now 2k+
500-700 for a USA MMSub, now 1100-1200
I get these are asking prices and there are some good deals to be had, and I can go on and on but man this is getting ridiculous..
But have you actually looked on both eBay and/or Reverb and used their advanced searches for the SOLD prices ? for example: on Reverb put your bass model in search bar , Go to "All Filters" , click on it , Then check off "Sold Listings" box and hit search button to reveal the actual sold prices ..... Maybe you have used this tool before ? If not now you know :bassist:

What scares me the most (here in the states anyway) is the absolute lack of fear of going into MASSIVE debt among people under 40.

I simply can't even imagine buying a $500,000 house if I don't have half that to put down on it (at least). But I know lots of younger couples making RIDICULOUS mortgage payments. They also make $600 car payments on new Tahoes and Lexus SUVs.

Some of them are musicians. And these guys will FINANCE a drum kit or a $8,000 PA system for their band.

Their monthly payments must be INSANE.

Let me put it to you this way. PART of the reason houses are so expensive is people having a PAYMENT mentality. You get to tue end of your month amd there's $3,000 left. You think "Well, I can afford a $2,000 mortgage payment and still have money in the bank!" Nest thing you know they're putting a transmission for their car (that isn't even CLOSE to being paid off) on a credit card because there isn't enough in the bank to cover it.

If we were only able to put a grand a month away in savings I would he losing my mind. And yet there is a HUGE percentage of people here in the IS who.....

1).....slide into home plate every month BARELY making every payment, AND....

2) .....think they "deserve" another bass or a new car or a bigger house or a $10,000 Disney vacation amdanage to somehow squeeze one more payment into their budget.

It literally makes my stomach uneasy to even imagine living that way.

Do NOT finance a bass (or amp or pedal or whatever music gear) especially if you already have one and don't make a living playing music. That is simply idiotic. Period. Dumb. Stupid. Ridiculous. Insane. Not very bright. Stop it. Put down your freaking computer mouse, or phone, or iPad and go for a walk while you give yourself a lecture on not being an idiot.

I haven't heard any economists or "experts" saying this. But I think PART of this inflation is due to people who only care about surviving another month having gotten back to zero (or close to it) in their bank accounts.

You do not "deserve" anything you can't pay cash for with the obvious exceptions of a shelter and food and the POSSIBLE exception of a car. Everything else, if you can't hand over the money for it, you can't afford it and shouldn't get it.

Before you light into me, I have been FLAT BROKE TWICE in my life. And I practiced what I preached back then. Once I slept on a friend's couch for two weeks. When I got my own place, I got a mattress from a family member who was getting a new one and put that sucker on the floor of my bedroom. My clothes were literally stacked on the floor. I used paper plates and a plastic cup I had gotten from a baseball game a few years earlier. I drove a 15 year old car with 275,000 miles on it and clawed my way out with ZERO debt. I've lived it.

Make a mortgage and a credit card a LOT harder to get, and enforce WAY lower caps/limits on them. It will hurt for a little while. But after a few years IQs will rise and we'll settle into better times.

Smartest thing I've seen on talkbass in a while.

Don't have to mention that the prices of everything have gone up. Including used bass guitars. Worst inflation since Jimmy Carter. Here on TalkBass, the selling price usually includes shipping. Shipping a bass in getting into the $100 range, some more than that. That increases the price of buying used.

For used basses, check Facebook Marketplace or your local Craigs List. There are still some good deals but we have to be patient and keep looking.

The most "WOKE" comment on TB. Nice!

You wouldn't believe how much this country is in debt right now because of this. Oh btw, stop bring political on a forum full of bass players that think a new bass can make them "sound" better for a low monthly payment of $30 a month no interest for 48 months

People are asking high, because they need money. That's it. I have routinely been getting the best deals of my life, during the pandemic – even from established, brick and mortar dealers. Sellers are going down farther, faster, than I have ever experienced in my 3+ decades as a used gear buyer.

I would like to assemble another parts, kit, high end kit.... just for something to mess with.

I recently traded off a jazz box guitar for a nice violin of equal value and I think I'll be able to move violin much quicker.

I'm thinking about maybe making a trade of some stuff for a quality snare, because I've never really had a top quality snare drum. Maybe it's time and I need to declutter... er... transform the cave.

But are they selling at this point? I know they were, but the past few weeks...I think inflation on essentials is starting to set in. I might be wrong as I'm not an economist, but it seems like I see fewer people at restaurants, more cars at the car lots, etc. I think peoples wallets are purses are tightening, and I think we will see a significant drop in prices as far as non-essential products and services coming. The average person will be focused on paying for the basics and not that 3rd bass, 4th amp, that vacation, etc.

I have a son turning 16 later this year, so I am hoping for the used car market to crash back to reality from a lack of demand/buyers.

Peavey T-40s are 800-1200..........

The question is: Are all these basses selling?

earlier in the thread @RichterScale invited us all to build our own to avoid the market sways and the costs of new/used instruments, but i'd like to put in another good word for "parts basses" which are probably not as cheap as building them from scratch, but which are always cheaper than buying new off-the-rack, and apparently cheaper than many used axes currently. and you don't need real luthier tools to assemble (or, have assembled for you) a fine instrument.

if you can get along with bolt-on necks you only need some imagination to create a 'custom instrument' of the highest playing quality. if you're a 7ender fan: a parts-FSO is a no-brainer (thanks, leo!).

just sayin' --- if you wanna 'fight inflation', price gouging, or even some boredom = do it yourself! ;)
