Looking for 5 string with small body, thin neck

JoeyBass - Not sure why you feel that you 'look like an ass' - I was about to suggest the same thing. Is it because some many others proposed more high-end basses? I personally like my Spector ReBop 5 a lot. I know it is not 'boutique' or even close, but it sure is light as a feather and plays really well.

I have owned a fretless j bass, 2 Ibanez basses (SG400 and SGR800 - i think those model descriptors are correct) and find my Spector to have a very similar feel to the Ibanez basses - which I thought felt great to play.

But maybe I will feel like an ass too after I figure out why you said you do... But for now, I am comfy with the Spector suggestion.

I have to step back into this old thead and say that I played a Cort Curbow today and it is possibly the smallest bodied bass I've played, and the neck was pretty small/easy too. I'd give this bass serious thought if'n I were concerned about body and neck size. I was impressed by the build AND the fact that it had good balance for a bass (both standing and sitting) with that small a body.

You should check out Skjold basses and talk to Pete Skjold. His basses seem to have very compact bodies. I believe he'll also do pretty much whatever you want.

IIRC his pricing is pretty good, but might be above 1K.

+1... very light, very small, and the two I've played have nice thin neck profiles. As long as you don't go nuts on the wood and liminates, they are very affordable (and are a good value even if you do go nuts on that stuff). I'm a huge fan of his 'whaleback' bolt on single cut design.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Last Saturday, I drove all around the Chicago area, trying stuff out. My favorite was a Pedulla Thunderbass. It's way out of my price range new, but I know used Thunderbolts can be found for a little over $1000.

I've checked out the Skjolds - they look nice. Does anyone know how the Skjold neck compares to the Pedulla? What string spacing does Skjold use?

Kim, you should contact Pete Skjold directly. Either through his site or by PM here. He's usually around and very friendly. I'm sure he'd be happy to fill you in.

I agree with the Ibanez Soundgear. SUPER fast neck in 5 or 6
and contoured (teardrop shape) to be thinner at high side and
thicker at low side. Spacing a little tight to some, but I've got
big hands and I like 'em. Also the Barts a big plus. Try one.
