Looking for a 1967 p bass - $250 budget - possible??

Hi all, first posting here.
I don't play bass or any other instrument other than drums - which I've really only dabbled with for 30 years.
So my 14 year old daughter, who has been playing bass for a little over a year, has challenged me to the Charles Berthoud 30 day course and the little stinker told me I can't use either of her basses (a squier jazz and a cheap sterling stingray- her favorite) so if I accept ( which duh! Of course I'm not going to disappoint my kid) so how about If I can find something different to have. I was born 1967, a p bass to the collection, am I unrealistic in finding something playable this old for $250 ??

Welcome! Instruments tend to appreciate in value as they age. You won't find what you're after at that price. Maybe add a 2 in front of your number and you'll get a screaming deal.

However, if you want to find a P bass, you can find plenty in the $250 range on the used market that would serve your daughter quite well for many years.

Most '67 Fender basses and guitars are generally in the vintage market and can sell for many multiples of that $250 all day long. Having said that, maybe there might be some rode hard/put up wet survivor from someone who doesn't realize what they have, but I'd say the odds are very long for that.

Here's a listing from George Gruhn's in Nashville, one of the handful of pre-eminent vintage and collector guitar stores, with a listing for a year before your birthday, from 1966, a sunburst Fender Precision in sunburst and VG shape. Gruhn's is a benchmark retailer for vintage instruments, and a Gruhn's Appraisal is accepted by all insurance companies, to give you an idea of their expertise.

You might not be able to find an empty Fender bass case from 1967 in the $250 range. Adding a period-correct instrument will raise the price considerably.

I hate to tell ya, but a '67 P bass is outta your reach, entirely . They haven't been worth $250 since the 70's. :wideyed:

Well...
You know the old saying, "anything is possible"? Some things definitely are not possible (in this reality, anyway), but this scenario? Highly unlikely. Short of finding one in a clueless person's garage sale? Don't hold your breath... Still, it will give you something to search for - like me. I looked for a left handed Gretsch bass guitar for 15 years before I found one. Been looking for another one for... going on 20 years, now... :whistle:

I'd look for a used Chinese Squier Classic Vibe 60's P bass. I have one and it's definitely much nicer than the price even new. I also gave Warmoth and Modulus instruments so not all of my quiver is budget.

Maybe not $250 but definitely $25,000.

I was in getting my bass set-up at local shop and a guy brought in a T-Bird copy in a hardshell case to sell. He looked disappointed when the owner of the shop told him the case was worth more than the bass.

That said, I think you could get a Squire P-bass for around that price used if you look. Forget about getting a Fender or a vintage bass, if you found one for that it would have many problems. You don't want your daughter starting on a bass with many problems.
