This is my first post
Here's my story. I started playing on every instrument on my band (we like playing a lot of pop punk, and some nu metal and alternative) and we settled for the bass... so for the last 8y I've been using my Chinese Squire PJ w/ SD QP PJ pickups (I'm from Colombia and I was working part time so that's all I had with my budget haha)
So now we went on recording studio and noticed my Chinese Squier is not really the best tone I can get for our recording... So starting to play different other basses. So I got this 99' MIM Fender Precision... I noticed the difference right of the bat. It was brutal. Very punchy with great mids... Way better than mine (I love my Squier, it's my first bass but I know its limitations, that's why I tried to boost it as much as I could with the SD QP pickups). However getting such bass like 2022 Fender MIM (even worst an MIA) down here in CO is very expensive.
I've been trying to consider some other basses. I went only and start googling and found some great options like Yammies, Sire Marcus M., even Sterling MM, Ibanez, Schecter... But I am now overwhelmed with them. But just online, YouTube and Music stores... The worst part is that here in my town I can only get Squier or MIM Fenders on my local stores for some reason... No one seem to sell anything else here. I don't think I can afford a Fender right now, and settle for another Squier (even though I wouldn't call my Chinese Squier better that some other Squier I've seen) doesn't seem the right thing to do right now for me.
I have come to this forum looking for some guidance. So far I cannot listen to any of the best options I found. Yamaha BB735A seem reasonable, and there's a Sire Marcus P8.
Also... I'm quite confused with the differences between a PJ setup, JJ, HH setups... I don't want to ruin my sound and style. My bandmates keep telling me the Fender Precision is the sound of the punk we all love and that I should invest the money (it's fifteen grands!). I can't believe for 3 decades there's no other bass that I can get with the same tone/sound for some punk rock. But it's so hard to buy stuff without actually playing it or listening to its sound live
I can use some help here as I consider myself a beginner even though it's been years.
