Looking for a certain sound...

I have a Cort Curbow 5 string w/ Bartolini mk1 pickups and I'm finding it hard to get the sound and tones I'm looking for. I have Ernie ball super slinky roundwounds on it. I really like reggae music and have trying to get that deep tone it has. I have heard that flatwounds are better for that sound and also that passive pickups are better for that sound. I just bought i little Behringer 9 band graphic EQ which has helped a little. But should i change the strings and possibly the pickup? Also, I would prefer more of a 4 string spectrum I was thinking switching to EADGF instead of BEADG if and when i change strings. PLease lemme know what you think!! THANKS!!!

if you're looking for a reggae tone then I would listen to reggae bass players and emulate what they're doing. And with Youtube you can check out so much video footage of these musicians, see their gear, look at their playing styles and technique... it's all just a google search away...

And I would also just go with a four string fender bass and leave the strings on it that you have for a while until they get a more dead sounding vibe to them... check out the tone and technique of the bass player on this Bob Marley video: bob marley - YouTube

The classic roots reggae bass tone is a passive Fender Jazz bass with flats, tone rolled off, played through an Ampeg SVT or Sansamp.

Try changing your strings first, and play with the EQ and your tone knob. Going from low B to high F (C?) is pretty pointless IMO, especially for reggae.
