Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Damn - this went "south" quickly ! I have asked for opinions on the forums before - I have received some very good advice, and some not so good. From where I sit, the OP has received some viable options that he may have or may not have considered. Concerning Mr. Agedhorse, I consider him to be an invaluable asset to this community, and I thank him for his insight and knowledge. You know what they say - "opinions are like a__holes - almost everyone has one (or is one !)

How much liability does one take on buying a product that does not come with UL (and other required certifications)?
I'm not so concerned with FCC and other EMI / RF interference issues but rather potential shock and fire hazards.

If somebody gets injured, I would imagine that all of the liability will be focused on the builder and their "design/build" choices. If there are mistakes, errors or choices of poor judgement, it's hard to defend such choices.

As far as FCC/CE EMC/EMI/RFI violations go, the FCC has the power to enact the following:
- forfeiture of all non-compliant equipment o $100,000/$200,000 criminal penalty for an individual/organization
- a criminal fine totalling twice the gross gain obtained from sales of the non-compliant equipment
- an administrative fine totalling $10,000/day per violation

In hindsight, I was looking for an unrealistic crystal ball answer.
How dangerous is it for a player to use a non-certified amp?
I'm going with "it depends"...
It depends is a good answer. There is such a wide range of "this looks perfectly ok" in the DIY world that it's impossible to say.
 
"The fuse blew? Well, just wrap it in this tin foil, it'll be fine..."

Actually, there are parts of the safety certification process that investigate a failure of the basic safeguards. One is to investigate what happens when a user accessible fuse is bypassed with a non-fusible link. There are limits as to fire, short circuit currents, duration for additional safeguards to protect for user safety. Some amps will have a back-up fuse inside the amp that will open if the primary external fuse fails to operate. Sometimes, we will include thermal links and fuses inside the transformer itself or for the transformer to be totally enclosed. Sometimes, this may govern what minimum size power supply is needed or required to be shipped with (to insure that it doesn't overheat or the IEC connections don't break down). It depends on the type of power supply too.

All it takes is to see one catastrophic failure to appreciate why there are safety standards, and why we see so few electrical injuries from electronics here in the states, Canada and in the EU.

I remember seeing a demonstration of a Sunn SPL 18" speaker at the factory, that they basically hooked up some speaker wires to an electrical plug and plunged it into the wall power outlet and watched it jump around for a while on the floor!

Good times in Tualatin Oregon :)
