Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Once you stop playing, it winds down to a quiet purr. I love it because of its size and its sound, but I don't have a problem with fans.

Actually, in post #10 I asked you to PM me about this, I was going to GIVE YOU AN AMP for FREE. I generally don't offer something for free publicly because then I'll get a hundred requests for the same free thing.

I don't understand how you have convoluted my attempt for help or even my opinion for being self-serving, condescending, or having anything to do with ego. You asked a question, I provided an answer and opinion.

OK. That brings me back to my college days! We had some Adcom amps powering some very cool Shahinian Obelisk speakers in the Electro-Acoustic music lab. One day, this Stewart amp is there instead. I thought someone had brought in a car stereo amp and was wondering how they did the AC to DC conversion. But nope....it was a wall plug! Tiny, tiny amp for the times. Sounded just OK. Didn't have the headroom of the Adcoms. Man I wish I had some Shahinian....

Andy is one of the most knowledgeable people on this entire forum regarding amps. The way you're dealing with him is like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Ya'll are totally stuck in the past. What OP is asking for is easily accomplished.

What the heck is unappealing about those prices? I would go for one of those Sure boards with an integrated fan so you don't have to worry about it, rather than leaving it off the build entirely.

Personally I think it's smarter to mount the amp board inside the speaker cabinet but if you want to put it in the same box as the pre go right ahead.

The problem with the Sure is that you need a power supply. Power supplies aren't cheap if you don't know how to make em. That was kinda the point of most people's posts. Car audio amplifiers are super cheap for thousands of watts....yep....no power supply.

My Acoustic Image died on me twice on gigs and once in the studio. Once just after we started (it was an outside gig and it was pretty warm) and the second time in a club just after we finished our soundcheck. I could smell something was burned every time. I was using an 8 ohm cab at a moderate volume. AI customer service is great since they offer lifetime warranty on their amps but I live in Europe so the shipping ended up being expensive anyway. I ended up selling the thing because I didn't want to risk another failure. Too bad because I liked that amp very much.

Job one: please give the power supply and nominal/max output level specs for the preamp in question. For a quick and easy compact build you'll probably fare best with a power amp module that has a built in aux power supply, and I'd recommend one with overload protection as well.

Parts Express only sells older ICEpower designs AFAIK. Not necessarily a deal breaker (I have a great sounding convection cooled 500ASP build), but not my favorite solution either. Historically Hypex has given a lot more love to DIYers in terms of tech support, it's always been part of their business model. But you pay for that tech support too. ;)

The 500ASP, currently $320, was on sale recently for $225 or $250. It includes a power supply. A $20 wiring harness got you operating, although the enclosure, shielding, and ventilation were not intuitive to someone like me, with little electronics experience. I still watch the price, because I still think it is a viable option, but not until someone like Agedhorse or Passinwind teaches us how to do it safely, neatly, and economically!

As to Mr. Agedhorse, I have been reading his posts for years, and I have yet to see him be anything but a perfect gentleman. He is friendly and helpful.

He is also a tremendous asset to this site and to all the serious users of this site. I am very skeptical of the comment about supposedly receiving (negative) PM's from other members about him. That sounds like BS from a guy who clearly is taking himself way too seriously.

I used to come here to TB to post questions about speaker design. Proven authorities like Bill FitzMaurice and Dave Green would type long, detailed responses that helped me immeasurably, they carried me up the mountain! Those guys don't live here anymore because of rude comments from a few ignorant, immature posters who offered nothing useful to the discourse.

Let's not do that again! This site is worthwhile largely because of the most knowledgeable posters, and not because of the sarcastic voices with little or no expertise.
