Looking for a good bass downgrade…let me explain.

So I have this Fender 2004 Mike Dirnt bass, quarter pounders, badass ii bridge, the works. I got it like that a long while ago.

Problem is, I need some money and really it’s just a lot of bass for someone who isn’t a bass player. I just need a bass to record with.

The type of music I make is like modern lofi garage punk/rock type stuff. That thing Australians seem to be really good at for some reason lol. Almost like surfy punk. Idk, you get the vibe.

So I’m looking for possible downgrades. I was thinking either:

1. 40th Anniversary Squier P
2. Vintage Revo Callan
3. Squier CV 70 P
4. Squier Rascal
5. Some kind of Yamaha BB (I just thought of this while I was typing so I didn’t do a lot of research yet).
6. Epiphone Grabber reissue used? Don’t know about this one.
7. Pravey T-40 (someone is selling one local)
8. Some other option (suggest me something!)

If you were presented with these options for something given the genre, what would you choose?

I’d love to hear from you guys. Help me out here.

Any well set up Squire P with functioning electronics and the strings you like will be great for what you need. Not saying the other choices would be bad, but that's what I would do and it's the easiest to recommend without knowing you personally.

I'd think some flavor of Squier.
The T40 might cost an arm and a leg and be heavy.

Start with whatever's cheapest - and as soon as you hit one that feels right, stop there and buy it!

The paltry amount of money you end up with will not make any real difference, but you will regret ending up with a cheapo starter bass. Keep the Dirnt.

Agree, either one of the Squires that speaks to you.
The T40 is apparently an anchor, but pretty iconic.
The Grabber RI is supposed to be good, although different from the original Gibson ones. Doesn't have a sliding pick up for starters, does it? They LOOK great

Any one of those in playable condition would work with the exception of the grabber. A lot of that sound you are after is not the bass itself, it’s how you produce the signal coming out of the bass that makes it.

Unless Dirnt basses go for some incredible amount of money where you live I just don’t see how trading it in on these options is going to benefit you.

Move from P to another P , as a punk rock bassist , both Squier 40AV P and CV70P are good move.

There are MANY other ways to make extra money. Keep the bass you have and dedicate more time to it! It will likely be a joy to record with!

You might like a short scale if it’s just for recording. Squier mustang. If you’re a guitar player that just needs it for recording a short scale will be comfy.

I don't see why someone doesn't issue a Grabber sliding retrofit kit maybe sold through ETSY or Reverb. I wonder if routing would be required. I know a pickguard would be most of it. Make it work with the Epiphone pick up as it comes in the new grabber.

I vote keep it. If you must sell it, buy and play the replacement first and wait 6 months then do a comparison before choosing which to keep. However I don't think you'll make enough money to make it worthwhile.
