Looking for a New Bass

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this site but have been reading it for a while and felt I would post my own question. So I've been looking to get a new bass as I've been using the same one I got when I started six years ago. I've given myself a budget of 1000$ CAD and was hoping some of you could give me some good examples of basses within that price range. Thanks in advance!

Two brand names that seems to me to have the most bang for the buck under $1k are Sire and Ibanez, but there are plenty of other options.

Need more info to make helpful suggestions. Depending on what you like, pretty much every bass available in that range could be a good one for you.

What do you play now?

What do you like about it?

What would you like to change?

What are some bassists or basses that you’ve heard and liked the sound of?

Etc

I'm looking for a J bass. I've been looking at the Fender standard but I don't know if the MIM one is a good investment. I play an Ibanez GSR200. I don't really like much about I'll be honest. It was a starter bass.

I should also state that I'm from Canada. I would love a Sire but it seems like such a hassle to get.
Yeah, I'm mildly annoyed at Sire for not having a direct online sales presence in Canada. They're such a good deal here, it's a shame they aren't so much there...

The MIM Fenders are good. The squire VMs are too, based on the recommendations of a lot of people here, but I could never get along with the feel or sound of them. I would look for a used MIA or try to play some new MIM or Squires. If you play one and you like it, awesome. You've found what you're looking for. If you get a used MIA or even MIM, then even if you don't like it then you can probably flip it for the same price. They hold their value well.

I actually just found out from my friend that they do ship to Canada. They just might get stuck at the border sometimes like they did for him. I may end up going with that now haha.

Ahh yeah, sadly, they're not such a great deal in Canada, from what I hear - really wish Sire would open a direct purchase site for Canada too.

You should be able to find a used CIJ Geddy Lee Signature Fender Jazz Bass for under $1000 (not sure about the exchange rate). I’ve had one since 2007 and it ain’t going nowhere. I preferred it over the American Jazz I tried at the shop.

+1. I have a V7. Love it. Upgraded bridge with Babicz. Awesome J style bass. You would have to spend much more than the cost of the Sire to get a better bass.

If you really want new vs. used the MIM Fenders are very nice and G&L has their Tribute line which are well made. Some of the Squiers are very nice as well. If you go used then you open up way more possibilities. Just keep your eyes open and you'll eventually find exactly what you want.
