You could always buy a middle of the road bass that needs a few upgrades, add some new pickups and preamp and be done. I have upgraded a few Ibanez 5 strings this way, and they sound fantastic.

I want to buy a new bass to replace my cheap yamaha bass, but I have no idea which bass to get. I will be playing a lot of metal, but much more than that too. I want a black, neck through bass with a humbucker (or two), but Im open to other things too. My budget is around $1500, but I obviously dont have to spend it all.

I took the time to mock this up in Kiesel's build page. If you don't want active electronics, then $1499.BOOM.

You could even lose the optional satin-finished neck, as well as the blackER ebony board, and you'd be well under your mark for a factory-fresh bass made just for you.

You can find a used EB Musicman or Warwick with that budget. A decent Precision bass can be an option if you dont insist on humbuckers.

If you don't know exactly what you want you are not ready for a new bass. Play your banger until you develop a desire for a specific instrument, by then your budget should grow as well (provided you keep putting a little money aside when you have a chance). JM2cO

A used Spector Euro 4LX (or one of the older NS-4CRFM) basses should do the trick. The 4-string varieties are usually sold in a P/J pickup format, though there are Euro 4LX "TW" basses around that have two humbuckers (much harder to find though).

Here's one that's a bit above your price-range, but something along these lines. There are Euros that fall within your budget.

Fun fact - Jason Newsted recorded the Black album with an '81 Spector NS-2 bass (except for "The Unforgiven" where he used a '59 Fender P-bass).

I think you maybe need one of these... I'd like one myself, but since I'm a lefty, I had to settle for a black '18 Gibson T-Bird. I like it, but.. it's kinda way out of your price range. The T-Bird Club here thinks very highly of these Epiphone 'Birds, though..

The neck-through Epibirds are surprisingly great basses, though depending on which one you get it may or may not sound anything like a Gibson T-bird. For that matter, a Gibson is an option if you go used or come across a great bargain like I did. Really though, I would drop the neck-through retirement, you’re ruling out a ton of excellent options in your price range otherwise.
