Looking for a new rig...perhaps an addition to my current..

I guess i'll start with what i'm currently running - for the past 8 months i've been running an ESP LTD F-415fm through an Ampeg SVT-3Pro amp with a 410 hlf classic cab...

Now, the tone i have with this setup is awesome, however, i'm finding that during jam sessions/gigs where i'm not also running through the PA - i'm getting drowned out.

I've seen a few people that've had that problem with this head in particular, but from what i have read, no one's willing to drop that head for the sound it can produce (speculative, of course).

What i'm thinking of doing is grabbing a multi effects processor for my bass (rack mountable would be a bonus), and i'm yet to try one, but i'm leaning towards a boss me-50b.

I'm also thinking of switching out my current head for a Peavey VB-2 head, and running it through my current 410hlf cab. I suppose what i'm asking is if anyone has experience with this head (with the same setup, similar, or entirely different) knows of any drawbacks this amp has - how it compares to my current ampeg unit, and even if there's thoughts on the me-50b from boss.

Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm a few months away from the purchase date of whatever it is i'm looking for; but i believe that knowledge is power, and i find forums to be a great way to find out all aspects of a product!

turn the gain way up. the input light should be well lit while you're playing since it's not a clip light. once you do that, you should get a lot more out of it, and you'd have to be in a doom band for that not to be enough.

the light on this amp IS a clip light - its not supposed to be well lit - you can see right on my amp underneath the light "Peak/Mute" and therefore, turning it up like that doesn't work.

i have a couple of better setting ideas to try out once i get the rig out from the drummer's place.

It's also an Ampeg amp and the manual is misleading. My 4 PRO has to have the input gain light on almost the whole time to get enough sound out of it.

Do you have the ultra low switch on? Turn that off! That could be reason number one why you cannot be heard.

Also, the 3 PRO gets that extra grunt in higher volume areas from the driver tubes feeding the power section. Taking the signal out of the head will bypass those tubes and not give you the extra growl the head gives off. You will get primarily a clean Ampeg tube signal if you take the pre-out: still plenty usable.

+1 with Jimmy. Ignore the red flashing light - use your ears. Run the gain at least at noon, maybe 1:00 and crank your master. Also run your tube gain all the way up, and bump the master EQ slider up to between zero (flat) and max. Even when competing with big guitar stacks, that amp should crank out more than enough to be heard.

alrighty; i'll give it a shot. dont have much to lose, either way.

i'll double check how i have it set up currently and post the outcome in a few days come jam time >.>

good luck. btw, that light IS an input light, not a clip light. had it confirmed by jerrold tiers, who used to be chief designer for ampeg when slm owned it. i used to run my gain at about 3:00 when i had one.
