Most tube comps can be overdriven. The Orange Squeezer clones can be biased to grit a bit. Many other comps can be set to add just a smidge of dirt (or a click sound) at the attack of each note, by setting the attack control at one extreme or the other. The EBS tubesim is more about fatness and a very slight "furriness", not actual grit. I'm thinking a tube comp will be your best bet. Depending on your bass, technique, etc. you may need to put a booster pedal in front of the comp in order to OD the tube.

I find my Toadworks Mr Squishy great for if you need good compression, but without altering your tone. I have trouble telling if it's on, but when it's off I definitely notice. It's very transparant. Saying this, if you have a fairly hot preamp or pickups on an active bass, I've found the Squishy can get fairly gritty with the gain and level controls past 3 o'clock. I love mine and have no intention of getting rid of it.

I must add, I don't actually use it for the purpose of adding grit. I have my level and gain at exactly 3 o'clock. As has already been mentioned maybe you'd be better off looking at compressors designed more for such a purpose. Thought I'd throw this in anyway though

I use the MultiComp and I really like, but just as Bongomania says, the tubesim is more for adding a bit of tone to your overall sound... I actually use it after my overdrive in tubesim mode to get a really nice tube-ish overdrive
