Another vote for the Elf. I have head with one 2x8 cab. It sounds wonderful, small footprint, and light. I use it for restaurant/winery type gigs. 4 piece band, consisting of drums, guitar, sax and bass.

Looking for a practice amp

Another vote for the Elf. I have head with one 2x8 cab. It sounds wonderful, small footprint, and light. I use it for restaurant/winery type gigs. 4 piece band, consisting of drums, guitar, sax and bass.
PJB is all about having a clean, defined, and punchy bottom. I have a PJB BP-800 amp paired with either a PJB C-4 or Epifani DIST3 112 cab. The C-4 has more clarity and the DIST3 112 has more girth.
Although not cheap, this is what I would be looking at.

A bigger option, and more expensive, is the Mesa Subway D350 and either the Subway 115 or 210 cab.

In your situation, I would pile up a bit more money and buy a GK MB 115 combo.
It will do perfectly every thing you want, can be set at low volume for home practice while being loud enough for small and medium gig and you will hear very well all the frequencies a bass guitar can make from the very low up to the top.
The sound is very detailed while being smooth and it’s also very transparent in such ways that when you play a different bass, you will hear a different sound.
Among the combos I had/have are the Phil Jones, Ampeg RB 112, Fender Rumble 40 and the GK MB 115 is in a completely different league.

Phil Jones is your huckleberry. And Phil Jones the advantage of offering a line of combo amp that are small enough to sit beside your desk, under your desk, or even on your desk, if space is a consideration.
I hear you about the Ampeg thing. Some old school warm sounding classic bass lines sound great but I ditched it in favor of clean sound reproduction with no “baked in” sound. Believe it or not I found acoustic brand met my needs with a 600W 2x10 combo that boasts a class D amp with a good eq section. I can get an approximate Ampeg sound if I want it but I definitely get a more clean and modern sound all the time. Didn’t hurt my wallet either! I know gear snobs dislike acoustic because it’s not what it used to be, but it is still good.
Genzler also has excellent 15; if at home only Combo has no real advantage even if you go room to room for some reason
With Phil Jones the C8 should cure your Bass worries could use their BP 200 or Genzler/Mesa head also
I have Mesa WD800 with Mesa 1x15 for home use and works well in fairly small room and sounds as you desire although not opposed to a Gig if I find right opportunity but as of now that seems unlikely.
Was considering Mesa D350 and Mesa 1x12 which I would have been content with and all I needed but to my ear's the WD800 with tube pre and 1x15 have a 'Special Sauce' so to speak
If you find used Genz Benz Mesa Designer[ex Genz Benz Design engineer] still will service many of their products
I play the Subway TT800 through the Subway 410. It is a wonderful rig.Before I stopped playing I was looking hard at the mesa d 800 plus. I really like it's feature set. Just seems like overkill for a single cab (though I'm still considering it)
But the D350 may be perfect for what you want. It is 4/8 Ohm only capable though. It is whisper quiet as it doesn’t have a fan. But those who have them over in the Subway Club thread and the D350 thread on here rave about them. Particularly when paired with a Subway 115. I think it would be the ultimate practice rig. Buy once. Cry once.
Gear Review: Mesa/Boogie D-350 Compact Bass Amp
A couple dealers have been discounting them recently. So look around.
I have yet to find a practice amp I like more than the Rumble 40 V3. I gig Rumble 800s and the Rumble 40 is comparable in every way except power (and a couple of the back panel features that don't matter for practice).
The three voicing controls really give you a lot of flexibility. It can do hi-fi spank and it can do round/warm.

I've been looking at the gk 212 powerd combo. It's about $1300.
I saw a few used ones but not I'm my area. I wonder if I can get guitar center to pull one in from a different store for me to try? Has anyone done this?
Also, if anyone knows of a mesa head an cab for sale ar a really fair price, I may consider that as well. New mesa is just more money than I want to spend for home use.
