Looking for flatwound recommendation

Hey TBers,

Been using roundwound strings for decades but I think I’m looking for a change - a different sound, something deeper and richer with stronger fundamentals. Something like this. Rumor has it (based on threads I’ve seen here ) that flatwounds are the ticket. What are your recommendations? I have a Pedulla Thunderbass, if that makes a difference. The bass player in the track is Neil Stubenhaus circa 1992, if that helps.

I was about to pull the trigger on a set of La Bella Deep Talkin’ stings based on the link in the “FAQ" sticky, but thought it would be wise to first get some other opinions.

I like TI Flats for a less dense band mix. In an open mix they present beautiful harmonic complexity. In a crowded mix their strengths are buried. They are a very musical string. Tension is low and flexibility is very good.

I've had TI jazz flats on my Pedulla (and several of my other basses) for the past 10 years. Absolutely love them! I am a big flatwound fan.

I'm a XL Chromes guy. I use the lighter gauge so tension isn't a problem. I like the brighter round wound tone but the smoothness of the string. It takes a couple months for these to settle into a nice warm tone, with still a little brightness. there are going to be a ton of different opinions. I've played Fender flats, GHS Precision flat all were good strings just liked Chromes better. Jason at www.bassstringsonline.com

I personally think that in the music you provided roundwounds are used... The attack of flatwounds is less 'punch' and more OOMPH. It think a P-bass with nickel flats might perhaps be something for you, lows but with a nice edge of punch and definition? Maybe half/groundwounds even.

I like Chromes as well. I think they would be a good choice for someone new to flatwounds because they are a bit brighter than some other brands, but they still have that flatwound feel. I use the 105-50 set and have no complaints.

I hear good things about GHS flats but haven't tried them yet.

Whichever brand you finally decide on, I imagine you will be pleased with the results. I tried flats for the first time only two years ago and at last was really pleased with my bass sound. It took me a long time to come around to flats and I wish I had made the transition much earlier.
