I'd say Jaco broke from melody a lot more often than some of the aforementioned songs/artists.

Wooten usually has great melodies.

Check out "Manifest Destiny" by Jamiroquai on the Return of the Space Cowboy album.

And pretty much anything by James Jamerson is gonna have a perfectly laid down groove as well as excellent melodic content as well. "What's Going On?" and "Funk Me" by Marvin Gaye come to mind.

My $.02:
McCartney is the king of melodic bass in rock music.
But also check out Jack Bruce's wonderful solo album, "Harmony Row." And, his work on "Disraeli Gears" and the studio portion of "Wheels of Fire" (both with Cream). Like McCartney, he's an overall musical genius who happens to play bass, along with other instruments (and who composes and sings brilliantly). But he's also classically trained (on 'cello) and is heavily influenced by Bach, as well as by Mingus, Jamerson and the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds!" All this comes out in his melodic bass playing. He's still going strong today, but I'd start with the early ones I recommended above.

Pick up Joni's Mitchell's Hejira. Great lines done by the likes of Mingus, Jaco.. etc....unsure of who actually done that one but...

The bass on "Hejira" was mostly by Jaco, with some played by, I believe, Max Bennett.
The Jaco stuff on there is really musical and inspired, and definitely melodic. "Refuge of the Roads" is a particular favorite of mine.
