Looking for technique feedback on this bass line.

I'm working on playing "Here to Mars" by Coheed and Cambria. A tricky song for my current skillset.

There is one part of the song that gives me a lot of trouble, and I wonder if it's just how I'm playing it.

It's the first verse of the song where it goes "Hey stranger, been a long while..."

G|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--5------5---5\-----------3-----3-1----1-1---1-0-----1-0------------------------------|
E|-----------5------1-----1---1-3--------------------------3-1-0-1-3--------------------|

What I'm doing is sliding down with my ring finger landing on the F(1) with my index, and hitting the G(3) and C(3) with my ring finger trying to basically fret both strings with the ring finger, or trying to do some kind of pull-off when moving from G to C. It kinda works...But it just feels like it's killing my hand and it's sore after doing this for an hour. I practiced this song all last evening, and this morning the top of my hand hear my ring\pinky is kind of sore.

When I watch others play it I notice that they all use their pinkies. But every time I try this approach it just feels impossible to try and cross to the next string.

So I'm really just looking for some feedback on the correct approach \ technique to playing this part. I've had other songs where I run into the same problem where I have to cross over one or two strings really quickly, and it's just been a big challenge for me. I'm not sure if I'm just giving my hand a good exercise or if I'm causing problems.

When you fret with your pinkie, what are your other 3 fingers doing? They should be used to strengthen your pinkie fretting.
When I fret with my pinkie, especially in the lower frets, I'm really fretting with my whole hand, like a mitten. All 4 fingers are on the string , pressing onto the fret board and backing up my pinkie.

When I try with my pinky it's doing the majority of the work. The middle and ring are off the strings when I'm hitting that 3rd fret. Hitting the G with my pinky isn't a problem, it's when I move over to the C that I just can't seem to do it unless I used my ring finger. It's much stronger and is able to get over and get that string down. Also that particular line is pretty quick, so that makes it even more of a challenge for ol' pinky.
