Looking for the *right* amp-lows,mids & versatility

Sounds to me like you could use a good conventional 410, as long as it really kicks when needed, and a second cab to add to it when needed.

You have what I take to be a 2 ohm capable head, which can also two 2 channels with separate input attenuation. Get two cabs that play well together.

My approach was at first to use a 4 ohm Epfani UL1 410 (a superb 410 that weights less than 64 lbs), to which I would add an 8 ohm Epifani 210. The 8 ohm cabinet had different brand drivers which sounded a lot darker, so I ran each cabinet off of it's own power amp channel and "mixed" them (see below).

I improved that by switching the 210 to an Epifani UL1 218 ohm, which had exactly the same drivers and x-over as the 410. The make a great 610 that presents a 2.67 ohm load—to much to bridge, as 4 ohm is the limit when my Crest CA6 is bridged.

However, they were very happy with only one channel of a Crest CA6—which is after all a very strong clean 750 watts! that also left the other channel for other things, like driving a monitor, or whatever.

You could do the 4 ohm 410 + 8 ohm 210 using any good quality cabinets from the same builder as long as they have the same drivers and essentially the same cabinet geometry. You can bring 410, 210, or 610. Yeah, the 610 was always more than enough.

BTW, I have moved on to fEARful 15/6/1 cabs, which slay everything I have ever used for 4-string, 5-string, and upright. Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Loud Modern Country, Latin, Rock, and yes, Bluegrass!

My first fEARful — it was the first one in Hawaii!

Thanks for all the replies! So would that Avatar 153 be a good choice in cab?
...

Cabs like the TB153 have a quality 15" driver for lows, and a x-over to a 3" midrange driver. They can sound great. They take a different EQ than the typical 410 to get a similar sound.

Are they good?? Yes, but you are in for a long journey, which usually ends at fEARful or fEARless. I heard one of the 153s, and liked it. The price is good, but the construction quality is, IMHO, just so-so, especially concerning the crossover and the internal bracing.

Those things matter hugely with a driver like the 3015LF. The fEARful Greenboy design has that stuff down. Finding fEARfuls for sale is harder—but not that hard (mine are not). Used fEARful 15/6 cabs come up periodically on the TB and green boy forums, plus there are great authorized builders all over N.A.

There are some lengthy threads about the TB153 in AMPs, that are worth looking at. As said, the price is right, but IMHO, you get better performance and quality with an authorized fEARful build. Note, the TB153 is NOT built to anything like Greenboy fEARful spec.

Finally, if you are in the least bit inclined toward DIY, check out the cut kits at Leland Crookes Speaker Hardware website.

So I'm looking through the local classifieds, does anyone have anything to say about the goliath II? I saw one for 400$

Munji's eden 410 xlit also sounds like a good option. Right now I am wondering of buying a used or new cab. There is an ok selection of cabinets in montreal on the used market. Used edens are up, but at the point of paying more than 500$ for a cabinet I'd rather just buy a new cab with a payment plan that a shop can give me.

The Eden XLTs don't go very low, sadly. Never understood the appeal of those things.

Yah i just read up on that, not only that but I have tried eden cabs (not the particular) before and have yet to be impressed. I found the E string to be too growly, its like I want it to have a smoother low end but it just can't.

I myself have a natural midrange voice when I play bass (no matter what I do, I think its my fingers hahah) I don't think that this is a bad thing because a good 60% of the time I use it as my voice. This is why I like deep sounding cabs, they kind of make up for it by balancing it out

I've owned 4 different Eden cabs and have used a whole bunch more in Backline situations and just don't get what folks see in them

I HATE HATE HATE speaker distortion. I Want my distortion to come from a pedal or my amp, I don't want a bit of fart from my speakers. Cabs in my mind should not be "growly". This is what I love about ampegs that I try, they don't do that, just nice smooth deep lows. Albeit, they as said before, don't have much of a midrange voice.

I am curious about SWR, I have heard that the pre fender goliaths are great. Fairly hi fi but deep as well.

Shoot, I really, truly want to be helpful, I swear! I had a pre Fender Goliath...it wasn't that great, but I didn't really know what I was looking for at that point in life.

I keep coming back to some of the Bergantino stuff from what you're saying. Or a high quality 215 with a serious tweeter. Not the typical piezo tweeters in most commercial cabs. You can turn it down or off when you don't need it. The newer GK neo 12" based cabs could be the ticket as well

Have tried the neos! great cabs, have yet to try the bergs. Will gks be "warm" enough though?

GK NEOs are really responsive to your amp, a lot more than my old Ampeg 810 was. Meaning, my Ampeg 810 was warm enough with my GK 700RB II (well, "enough" is disputable), but my GK NEO 412 let more of the amp character come through. It was slightly too modern for me (for a lack of better word), a bit too bright, dry and very aggressive. I now pair it with an Ashdown ABM amp and it's a huge difference. Fantastic warm, round but clear tone. It's all about pairing it right for your needs.

I run a 65 Jazz through an Eden 550 into a BFM Jack 12. The huge lower mid bump that this cab has, and no other does that I've ever played through, totally compensates for the thin lows that the Jazz pickups have compared to buckers or even PBass pickups. It will play a low E full tilt with no distortion, and the tweeter array does slap and pop better than any other cab I've played, though the Baer ML112 comes close. But the Baer doesn't come close in the low mids. If you can build your own that's a huge plus in the cost department, but even if you have to buy one from one of Bills authorized builders its still cheaper than other boutique cabs.
