Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Try the "Search This Forum" button, and type in growl. Then try the threads that have more than 1 page of responses. Within those threads, "growl" will be highlihgted in red, and you can see what has already been said (and it's a lot) about how to get growl from your bass tone.
Also, I would start at the Distortion Review Megathread (linked in the FAQs). You can skim through it, or again, search it for the word, "growl."

This live [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] sounds like Claypool's typical mid boosted slap/strum sound. I'd suggest you have fresh strings and boost your mids for that sound.

I may get hammered for this comment, but I think Claypool's tone sucks...I like some of the things he does...but tone wise...not a fan...
Nah mate, I agree with you. I love Les Claypool and he's one of my favourite bass players (if not, my fav lol!) but I find his tone to be pretty bleh (if that's a word)... however listening to my Primus albums and watching him play live, I can't really imagine him sounding much different, although I quite liked his tone on the Brown Album... even if the album wasn't as good as their others
I think his tones are too varied for anyone to say "I hate Claypool's tone" and not mean a specific song or album. Or, for that matter, for anyone to try to emulate "THE" Claypool tone. I love the tones on Whales And Woe, but those tones are light years apart from Highball or Frizzle Fry which I also dig.
anyway, sorry for not contributing a helpful reply, I've found that the best way to get something near his tone (when I did a one of Primus covers gig) was to use fresh strings, 2 pickup active bass (us dlx pbass) with mostly bridge blended in with some neck, boosted mids on bass and then on my amp (Ashdown ABM500), set the input to clipping with the valve blended in for natural grind and set my EQ all at around 1/2 o clock with more emphasis on the bass and treble.
Best I can recommend to you is some sort of valve overdrive pedal... valves and slappin' = dirty grindin'!

A while back Claypool was unwinding the G and C strings on his 6'er and just using the core. Not sure if he's still doing it, but it sounds pretty cool, and very "Claypool".
