Ah, so then you understand that Xenforo (Xen Four-oh) is in fact what vBulletin 4.0 (as in vBull Four-oh, get it?) was supposed to be. And therefore, you shouldn't be looking for Xenforo to be turned into a vB clone, rather asking why vBulletin was not allowed to be modernized many years ago as is Xenforo.
Why? Why would you want to emulate vB? The vB archecture comes from the early 2000's. vB 4.0 was going to be a complete rewrite to bring the code up to the (then) standard. (To paraphrase IB) 'Uh, no… we're going go with agile development as a fast and efficient way of moving vB into the future.'
Ok, so you are simply talking about look and feel. This seems a bit odd since you tout your degree in computer engineering, I would think you'd be far more interested in the 'stuff behind the curtain' so to speak.
I think Russ did a great job with the TalkBass Retro theme. In fact, it's what I use (I have far more years with vB than with xF).

As one of the over 55's, I was attempting to make the point that this week's big issue is next week's meh...
I got used to the new look and features inside 24 hours, I can do what I want on the site and app so I don't care or really remember what it used to look like!
Life is too short to be bothering with how a Web site looks, security, functionality and useful content are my priorities - IMHO, YMMV, Getoffamylawn, etc...
This answer, while quite informative, is lacking in hilarity. Especially when I know people who live 1000 miles away, haven't lived here in years, yet still have their old local number.
I don't have to dial long distance to call them, yet I do for someone who lives an hour down the road.
