Are you playing the tone wide open or rolled back? Roll back the tone some. And I am using a 0.1uF cap which I think also helps.

Yeah I rolled the tone back on the bass, and tried various settings with the amp too, boosting the lows and highs and cutting the mids, etc. The amp is an Ampeg SVT-CL and I've been using two 15" cabinets at rehearsals. I'll keep them on a bit longer and see what happens, I'm in no hurry to ditch a set of $40+ bass strings. Thanks for all your input BTW!

Two 15" Cabinets? That could be part of the problem. Aren't 15's generally muddier on their own?
Well, they have a slower response than 10" speakers but these aren't bad. I also have a 4x10 that I sometime use alone or paired with an 18" cab.
But you're right it could be the strings/bass/amp/speaker combo in my case just doesn't do what I want. The two 15" cabs sound great with my Ric 4003.

I like Erni Ball flats on my P-Bass, nice thump but not too much.
On my old 60's Commodore semi, I use d'Addario Chromes. Find their brighter,more punchy tone compensates bit of the bass 'wooliness'.

Try 'em--you might be surprised. I just got my set of Medium flat wounds and the E string is broken in the package..the outer winding is parted right over where the core tapers down.
Great service I'm not slamming the company or the product at all, things happen. But I have e mailed them and we'll see what the next course of action is for me.
I'm sold on this company. I'd still love to try a set out and see what I get, but with one separated outer wrap...I'll not be stringing these up tonight....

So I got my D'ad Chromes and they're pretty awesome. They're not quite what I had been hoping for, but they're still pretty sweet. The biggest thing that put me off is the difference in tension between these and my old strings (Ernie Ball-Regulars) and for some reason the action was VERY high after putting these on, and I still havent gotten it down as low as I'd like it. I'm no expert at doing setups but I can't seem to figure this one out. The guage isn't much higher than my old Slinkies, and I dropped the saddles down to their bottoms... It's still high (and the neck is fairly straight, yes.)
After a few days of playing their starting to shape up a bit. The tone is pretty nice but not what I was hoping for at all in flatwounds. There isn't a big enough difference to really make the change in feel worthwhile to me. Will the tension loosen up a bit once these strings are broken in, or am I mostly out of luck?
For some reason when I thought of D'ad "Chromes" I figured the strings would actually be chrome-y like a few of the fretless's I've played in the past but they are in fact the complete opposite. I'm kind of disappointed there.

Like you mention the tension are different than your Ernie Regular Slinky Roundwounds. Flat wound tend to have more tension o nthe string so when strung them on a bass it will put more tension to the neck, so thats why you need to setup your bass again when changing from flatwound to roundwound or the other way round.
You prolly just need to adjust the truss rod. If you don't know, or don't feel comfortable doing that adjustment: Take it to a professional.

That's the thing though, is there really isn't enough bow in the neck to have it be an issue. I checked by doing the first fret/last fret test and it's only about a credit card's thickness.
It makes more difference than you may realize. My neck has about a 1mm bow with the 1st and 24th (last) fret down. If I made my neck flat my action would drop about 2 or 3 times that as far as I can tell with some testing (bending back the neck lightly on my leg).
Ya gotta give 'em 2-3 weeks at least. That initial zingy brightness will settle down and become well rounded thumpy goodness.

.045's on it's 30.5 scale neck. I would like to try flats but someone at the music shop said they don't work well on a short scale bass.

That all depends on how much tension you have on the neck now. The guage is close but that doesn't mean the tension is.

Gonna follow up on the Webstrings....
Wayne at Webstrings e mailed and apologized for the issue with the first set. They sent me out another set and I now have them on my Squier VM Jazz. I have a set of DR Flats that I have already ordered and if they ever come in I will try them on the P Bass. But I wanted flats on my VM Jazz, so I gave these (Detroit Flats) a shot on the Jazz. WOW about says it. They feel great and sound better! And for less than 20 bucks! I think I am a convert!
Also, tonight I had an email waiting for me from Wayne, following up to see if I got the replacement strings and if all was well. How's that for customer service? If you say, "No one does that these days", I'd say you are wrong, Webstrings does!
