Bill, I too subscribed to this build thread; I love all these "in progress" threads. Due to having: 4 basses, 3 guitars, a banjo, 2 keyboards and various other small instruments and only one house and one wife, my fretless purchase is on hold. Temporarily that is!
I will have one soon!!!!!
In the meantime, I love seeing these basses being built and love the updates. If I can be any help, let me know - I am playing my Musicman bass as I type this. I am very familiar with the Ernie ball style and can try and answer any questions you may have, however I am sure you are well informed as is. There is something very cool about having one pickup on a bass, especially if it is not the only bass you have to play gigs.

One question, why the "don't ask" on the banjo? Love them, truly love 'em... I even have a tenor one, for a little noodling about.
Oh, I'm sure you know a lot more than me about them, I have honestly very little hands on experience, but plenty of research & knowledge of their tones, and variations on model and sound. Helps that quite a few of the bassists in my fave bands play them, or played them at one time. I'll send you a pm on one question I do have.
I definatly agree on the one pickup bass deal, the only thing for me, is, I've nearly every time ended up routing in extra pickups to them eventually, but later realize I never needed to.... heh, I just can't help myself...
Just messing about the banjo- I am a silly Yankee from Cape Cod after all. I actually also have a tenor banjo that was built in early 1900's in NYC, which is worth some good $$, however it was given to me by my godmother who is no longer with us so it will remain with me for the rest of my days. (Note- Her family is from county Cork in Ireland, I believe DS may be aware of that place).
I will buy a fretless, most likely the Cen. Standard Diamond Wood if it is still available, just a matter of time.......I will certainly tell my buds in Roscoehead-land when the day comes.
Regarding the 1 pickup; I belive it was Dweezil Zappa that once had a guitar with one pickup and one volume knob- that was it. Simplicity can be a great thing.

Oh, and yes, very much aware of Cork.
Sweet, that's definatly one hell of a bass, but then, if it's gone, there's plenty more awesome fretless axes.
Hmm, basically either on, or off, and the tone is complety up to player dynamics, it'd definatly make you pay attention to technique!

And that's why people (some people) love Precision basses.
When I feel that I have a bad day with sloppy dynamics, I roll the tone knob down.
And when it really gets bad I roll the volume knob down too.

I guess I should keep my volume all off all the time then!
The only issue I have with P's, I keep on feeliing like I need a bridge pickup, for harmonics and such, so I install a J, and find that it's way too weak, and install a humbucker... and find the P is too weak, so get a more powerful P pickup.... but then they don't match tonally.... and on and on and......
In short, I'm a num-nuts.....
