Lost Gibson guitar in NYC

if you paid with a credit card, you've got something to go on and will get it back.

i understand the frustration, but calling guitar stores is most likely a waste of time. i'm sure it was an accident on the cab drivers part. not saying he diddn't take off like an idiot, but i bet its just because he's an NYC cabbie and thats just how they drive.

a while ago a friend of mine left something on a LIRR train, late night saturday (310am i think?) train eastbound out of penn. couple of days later he got it back.

be patient, im sure youll get it back-

i'm all the way in long island, but will have my eyes open.

good luck.

I rarely travel by cab, but years ago a guy gave me a piece of advice. When you get in the cab say "Hi, xxxxxxx" and call him by name. It's a friendly way of letting him know that you looked at his license and you know who he is. The connection makes it far less likely that he'll rip you off. Unless he's a hitman and you're a double agent. Then all bets are off.

Update: I get an email from a man named Joe saying he knows the guy who has my guitar and gives me a phone number of a man named Mark.

I call Mark, he says that he thinks some guy names Marcus has my guitar and gives me that guy's number. I call Marcus who says that Joe sold Mark my guitar and that Mark has it. Back to Mark who apparently "buys and sells lots of guitars" and doesn't recall buying my guitar today. But he will check. Supposedly. Here's hoping I'm not about to get stabbed in an alley.

I don't understand, you can't contact the cab company until Tuesday? How do you book a cab then?
Over here, every cab trip is logged. I would only need to say "one of your cabs picked me up at X Street at 4.35pm Friday and dropped me off at ## street at 4.48pm." they have GPS tracking etc. Shouldn't be too hard.
I understand NYC is huge so maybe there'd be 20 cabs fitting that trip situation, just thinking out aloud.

That stinks, we need specific musician's insurance which covers our gear at gigs and in transit. There probably is such a policy but it's too much money for us poor musos lol.

I hope it works out well for you.

Wow. as a Bronx native born and bred I actually take offense at this comment. Did you grow up in NYC? If not, what is the basis of this comment?

Probably 60 yeas of TV and Movies depicting the Bronx as a tough place to live. Seriously dude everybody in the world knows about the Bronx. I am also aware that NYC's crime rate has dropped dramatically and is the safest it's been for years. But don't get narky at people having an image of NYC that was propulgated by American TV and Film makers for over half a century.
since when do people need to live in a city to form an opinion?
I think NYC is a fantastic thriving metropolis full of variety and life. I would definitely visit if I ever cross the pond. I thus have an opinion even though I've never been there. I bet I know more about your city than you know about mine. Why? TV and film.

You hail cab's in the street. There are different companies but for the most part they are all yellow. The unique id is their medallion #. The TLC, which governs all the cabs, is unable to get me the info at this time but an investigation ticket is open. I'm being proactive.

On another note, the guy who supposedly has my guitar is in flushing Queens according the eBay account that shares the same username as his email.

Have you considered checking in with the NYPD Internet Fraud dept. before you meet whomever has the guitar?

Well the people who supposedly had my guitar were full of poopie. I never met them, but like you guys, it smelled fishy as all get out.

So I called everyone (311 TLC) and filed a police report. The company that owns the medallion opened today so I called them and got the medallion number and the guy's cell phone. The cabbie explains that he's been waiting for me to call him but he couldn't find a name tag or ID on my stuff. He then dropped it off at my house a few hours later on his way to work.

He didn't realize it was in the trunk. Later in the morning, a passenger put a suitcase in the trunk and tried leaving with my guitar case. He got out of the cab and told the guy to leave it because it wasn't his. The cabbie then put my guitar and messenger bag in the front seat for the rest of his shift and its been at his house ever since as he's waited for my phone call.

His english wasn't very good but he either plays music, or friends/family are musicians and he understands the bond that people have with their instruments which is why he made it a point to give it back. He didn't drop it off at the police station because apparently he figured I'd find him since I paid with my card.

I gave him a few bottles of wine for his troubles. I'm still as excited as all shag.
