Here’s a photo of me playing the one that got away. Photo is from December 2011, my sophomore year of college. The bass is a dark blue 2002 Squier 20th Anniversary Edition Affinity Precision Bass. I had purchased it from Guitar Center for $100.00 and did nothing to it. It just played so well. The neck was great, the bass was light and it dished out the P-Bass tone in spades.

I owned three basses at the time and was struck with a wish to thin the herd. I gave the bass to a friend whose church had a music education program for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to take lessons. I’m sure many kids have received joy and appreciation for music from this bass, and I’m glad for that. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the bass, though.

Mine was a Roscoe SKB3006 that the guys at the Roscoe shop called “The Brain”. It had a madrone burl top the likes of which I’ve never seen since (which is how it got its name). It also had a growling tone I’ve never been able to get out of any other bass I’ve owned.

I’ve looked for it for years, but have had no luck finding it.

There are 2 I miss. I wouldn't buy them back today as they are 34" and I'm playing 30" these days due to arthritis.

1. A Sunburst 92 MIJ 75 RI J. This one had the double dots in the neck binding, a fret or two shy of the octave! And man, that bass cut through a dense mix like a knife theough butter... that was a good one!

2. Creamsickle. A safety orange Reverend Rumblefish PJ with maple neck, white pickguard. In my power trio days, before the dense mix... the bloom of the Rumblefish was it. Lord but if they made a short scale Rumblefish I would be in line...

It's been a crazy busy summer season for me. I've been gigging non-stop. All I have been playing are 30" Nordstrand Cat's in standard and BEAD, @JimmyM 's old MIJ Realistic Beatle Bass and a Guild Starfire with Bisonics all season. My joints and hands feel OK in spite of the wear and tear. I do miss playing some of the stable... Chef's old Dark Star LeCompte, a prototype Godin Acoustibass, a Marco P... but.. the reality is that physically, the 30" basses allow me to continue and the full scale basses are a bridge too far.

My first bass. Took the train into Toronto as my home town had very limited choices in the mid-80's.
i walked into Steve's music store and asked if they had any Ric's in stock. Sales dude says it's our lucky days as we just received a shipment that morning. I wanted a Fireglo, but was told that they didn't have any Fireglo, but they had a special run of solid red 4003's. I told them I wanted a 4001! Was then told that they no longer make the 4001 and that the 4003 was the newest version.
I bought the Candy Apple Red split pick guard Ric.
That's the bass I learned on and chewed up the frets with the Roto's.
One day, I noticed that there was a rattle coming from inside the neck. I took that bass to everyone in my home town, no one could fix it or even figure out was rattling! As it was my only bass and my band was heading out on the road, I didn't feel confident taking it as my only bass. Sold it on consignment.
Well, with the internet and all, I probably could have fixed it myself, know what I know now... Still looking for that bass and still drooling over @sloppy_phil Ric as it looks just like my old one!
I would still get a Ric, if I could find one from that era, thin neck and great sound!
