Loud acoustic bass

1 foot distance to mic. On a mic stand positioned the same distance from 12th fret on each instrument. And also the same set up measured at one meter. Each string tested open. Each string tested at 12th fret.
All tests performed in an open field, with at least 50 yds from any structure, behind my house. in our clearing.
I'm using Omni Mic with Audacity for this project. Did I forget anything?

IMHO a spectrum or waterfall plot would be way more informative than pure SPL; that way you could see the frequency distribution of the tone.

I am a speaker designer of 34 years. So there is not much in the way of measuring for effect I don't already do daily on my job. I build custom speakers for a semi retired living. I have a slew of different measurement programs to choose from as well.

It’s awesome that you’re doing this! Wish I was able to do something similar with my ABGs as well. That’s why I was asking how you’re going about doing this.
I was also going to measure the body thickness, lower bought, upper bought, waist, body length and sound hole of all my ABGs and then see/hear a correlation to loudness/body size. Of course strings will also make a difference as I do not have identical brand gauge style strings on all my ABGs

You don’t realize how loud they are/aren’t unless you sit across from one as it’s totally different from when you’re behind it playing it.

Okay ... I can now officially say I have heard a "loud" acoustic bass. I just got this in the mail. A Steven Burke custom job.
It has a 25% larger body than most. And it has ZERO problems keeping up with two acoustics strumming. I do not know yet how it would do in a setting with a few more instruments. But it does cut through the mix.

25% larger than most?
Could you take some measurements please?

  • Thickness (depth) of body
  • Width at lower bought
  • Width at waist
  • Width at upper bought
  • Length of body
It would be great to have this information for comparison.

I would be most interested in ergonomics. My Tacoma Thunderchief does pretty well, but it get uncomfortable to play pretty darn fast due to size.

Here is the really sick part !!! The photos did a great job of capturing the wood figure on the back and sides of the bass ... the Walnut. But the front is somewhat underwhelming in ALL of the photos, when compared to how it looks in person! There is a marked difference imo. And that rosette is AMAZING in person.

There really are NO standard size ABGs that get into "loud" territory. A few very well made ones get more than some others, but my Martin cant compete with the Thunderchief on volume, and the Mota edges out the Thunderchief. The Mota is 19 wide, 6 deep, and 25 long, basically an Earthwood clone.
