Loud popping noise

Hey everybody!

I'm running an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro, with an Ampeg 8x10 and a Rickenbacker 4003 and a G&L L-2500. I have the head mono bridged to give me 1600W.

When I play, I'll sometimes get an extremely loud popping noise coming from the rig. It's different than the sound a string makes when it hits the pickup--the loud pop I get can be heard if I gently hit all the strings next to the pickups (like tapping a bongo), or when I play really hard or even simple slap stuff.

Do you guys have any ideas on what it could be? Thanks!

And it's not just low transients being amplified by running 1600w into your cab? My first suggestion, since you seem to be able to prompt this by thumping the strings and you think that it's not the actual sound of you hitting the strings is to check out that bass. Make sure all the electronics are solidly soldered/connected. Does it do it with only both pickups? Have you tried it with one or the other pickup to see if maybe its specific to a pickup? Have you 'run' all your cables and made sure it's not a speaker cable, instrument cable, effects cable or any of the jacks?

Yeah, I've tried it with multiple basses and cables and I still get the loud pop.

My low frequencies aren't boosted that high on my graphic EQ, and my lowest frequency is all the way to the bottom. The pop happens with both pickups on both basses that I've tried it with.

For example, if I do that bongo hit repeatedly, the pop will happen randomly--I'll get normal tapping sounds then the pop a few times then tapping sounds.

Theoretically it should work as I'm pumping 1600W at 4ohms to the cabinet. I'm not cranking it either, my gain and master volume are both at midnight/roughly 5/10 volume

You say that you are pumping 1600W into your cabinet rated at 800W thermal. Do you see how this is perhaps not advisable?

It will indeed work BUT you are pushing your 8x10 way past it's limits. This it is telling you by the loud, unmusically noises it is producing. As previously posted, if your input signal is large enough you can be producing maximum output with your level controls virtually off.

I too suggest that you take the amp out of bridge before you do more damage to your drivers. If you cannot get as loud as you need, a second 8x10 run from channel two of your amplifier will resolve this.

Not for very long, and the damage to the drivers was terminal. That was a BS marketing gag that was never intended to be anything but eye catching (if it's what I remember).
