Love the Bassist, hate the band

For me, it's The Who. I can't stand Pete Townshend. The guitar and lyrics are boring to me, the ego and antics are obnoxious. But then there is John Entwistle; I can just tune out the rest and listen to him play and think about how his style would fit into anything I'm currently working on, and it reminds me to take another look at classic rock, which is something I don't listen to much.

Do you have a bassist you really like who is famous for playing in a band you don't like?

I like some of Entwistle's lines but I have never liked The Who and I wouldn't listen them these days. The whole scandal of Townshend being cautioned for accessing child abuse websites and then shamefully and remorselessly saying he was trying to expose the abusers rather than gratifying himself (whatever became of that then?), that was the point for me that I couldn't listen anymore.

Grand Funk. They were horrible, stiff, shrill Cream/Hendrix wannabe power trio crap with the lamest lyrics and Farner's mediocre guitar playing and yelping vocals, but oh baby, Mel Schacher was movin' and groovin', killer riffs, fat fuzz. When the keyboards were added and they got turned into a pop band, Mel all but disappeared. Yeah, I know, Homer.

You mean like Dave Mathews? Because I don't like the band, I've never been in to anything Victor Wooten has ever done, nor even knew who he was before talkbass.

I agree with this but to answer the question I'd say Rush comes to mind. Everything about them is extremely cheesy and corny, but if I'm forced to listen to them the bass line makes it bearable. Sometimes you're in someone else's car, or at the store, etc, not in a position to change the music.

I'm drawn to complex,high effort instrumental music.
It can be wild or mild.But it's always complex.
And with that the basslines are almost always complex.

I saw Wooten play on TV with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on Austin City Limits. He was impressive and stole the show for me. I'd never heard of him, i don't think I even owned a computer or used the internet much. I don't think Talkbass existed yet. A few months later he started getting a lot of hype in Bass Player Magazine. So he made a great first impression on me but i haven't liked anything I've heard from him since. I think the hype as a soloist went to his head and ruined him as an accompanying bass player.

I love The Who, but in my view Entwistle, while talented, wasn't essential to the sound in the way that Pete and Roger are…and Keith was.

Saw them on the anniversary tour, and between Zak Starkey and Pino, the rhythm section was well sorted.
