Low-cost DIY practice/coffeehouse tweeterless 110 [long]

That came out really nice! Looks better than the original, IMO. Great job!

I picked up a used S2010 recently and wanted to build another TB110 to pair with the first one I did. I went to Parts Express to see about getting the sub cabinet, and it has now increased in price to over $30. Plus shipping would cost another $25.

So I measured my original box and duplicated it in 1/2" birch plywood. Finished in Duratex and has dual speakon/1/4" combo jacks. Sounds great!

Edit: forgot to mention it's all rabbit and dado construction, glued and caulked, damped with batting.

So here is the TB110-MX. Second pic is the new one with duratex/birch ply sitting on top of the original carpet/MDF version.
 
Update: I took my birch TB110 to Fedex and weighed it on their scales. Total finished weight is 16.65 pounds. Compare that with the original MDF TB110 cabinet finished weight of 23 pounds.

That total weight is fantastic, as is the overall build. Very nice!

See Duke? Nothing to worry about! My 1x8 came in at over a pound more than MX21's, and mine is 1/2" arauco. Of course I braced the crap out of it, and my version of the handle recess you do on the Thunderchild added a bit of weight too. It's also excursion limited to about 25w, and fairly inefficient, being sealed and all (but does sound oh so sweet at low volume!).

But I love this little project. It is the height of simplicity - well OK, it isn't sealed, but I love a simple single driver enclosure. I'm very tempted to build one along the lines of MX21's as mine is marginal at best for the coffee house thing. If the singer did fire up the little PA, I think I'd have trouble keeping up with the one eight.
 
If it wasn't for the Neo prices issue, I think people would be building this thing left and right. I have been very happy with mine for months. It has held up fine. I don't need much stage volume, but I do crank on it at practices and at home when we don't have PA support. Lots of people don't need to fill the bar with bass from the backline, and this works really well for a personal monitor. It also does a good job keeping my amp and tuner off the ground. It's loud enough for my needs. I use it with a PF-500.

What a great thread and further instance of the generosity of Duke, greenboy and several others in sharing engineering and practical experience. Here is my question: I have an old Eden CX110 that looks to be roughly the same volume as the recommended PE box, I replaced the stock co-ax with an Eminence Beta 10 and it improved. In the interest of spending alap I'd like to keep that box and improve the performance as a simple one-way. Would the S2010 be a good match to this box, and should I do anything to the length of the port tube to change tuning to better suit a low B 5 string? Shoring things up for air leaks, bracing and stuffing easy enough to do. This kind of box is ideal footprint for theater pits that I do. Thank you!

Yeah. I held up building this one until I found a good S2010 used. Just couldn't justify the price otherwise. Good news is that this build came in around $70, even cheaper than the first one.

Almost everything says that this isn't a stellar low B cabinet. Workable, but not ideal. In order for anyone to have an idea how the S2010 will behave in your CX110 box they'd have to know the internal volume of the box and information about the port(s). Slot or "tube", cross-sectional area and depth. The S2010 seems to prefer a tuning of around 47-48 Hz, from what I can tell having played with WinISD modelling it.

I measure the internal volume of the CX110 box to be 1.3 cu ft less whatever volume the port tube takes up and whatever the speaker takes up. Port tube is 3 in diameter x 8.8 in long. S2010 has 1 mm more xmax than the Beta 10a I have in there and the resonant freq is 46 as opposed to 53 with the Beta. Don't know how to figure the tuning.

That may have been me. I was getting myself and my money together for this project when, that box came up on my local CL for the same money, I was lazy and went for it (felt bad for a minuet (or minute), not doing the box and all). I think the guy thought it was about done. Every thing was loose on it, tighten it up, sounds fine but, I was also thinking of going non coax myself, don't need the tweet. I have not take any measurements though.
 
WinISD suggests a tuning of 46 Hz for the S2010. Oddly, Eminences cab designs are all much higher frequency - in the 55 - 67 Hz range depending on the size of the box.

Modelling your cab I came up with a net of about 1.25 ft^3 cab, deducting the volume of the port and the volume of the speaker. WinISD shows your cab as being tuned to about 37 Hz. Too low for the S2010, I think. It increases the cone excursion at the resonance hump too much. I like the 46 Hz tuning. To get there, find a PCV tube of the same diameter, but it to 5" deep. Pop out the existing port and put the new one in.

Mind you, I'm an enthusiast, not an expert. Others are encouraged to show me the error of my ways. If they do it with respect and tell me where I really appreciate it because I learn from it.
