Low-cost DIY practice/coffeehouse tweeterless 110 [long]

However, before trying this, it would be good to understand how much I'd be giving up tone-wise.

But I mean, you have a small 10-equipped box here that does a good job of being a "Low-cost DIY practice/coffeehouse tweeterless 110". What's so hard to understand about that?
 
Duke, how big is the existing hole for the wire connectors on the back of the box? If I build one, I was thinking of using a panel mount speakon like this:

in place of the stock connection. Would it fit?

Isn't Parts Express's domestic shipping always free on orders over $98? I'm guessing the people who complained about shipping aren't in the CONUS.

Duke, major thanks for posting. Keep the homebrew ideas coming. I love the DIY ideas in the monthly Parts Express sale catalog too--maybe you can hook up with them for a featured DIY project (assuming they'll make it worth your while, since they get sales from the features).
 
No pics of a completed cab; I hope to be the first but my stuff just shipped today and will likely take 10 days at least to get to me. Somebody will probably beat me to the punch.

I get the PE catalog/flyer every month and every month I see at least a dozen things that "Hey, I could use that!" Question is "do I need it?" I just couldn't pass up on this opportunity. PE shipping is indeed free in the CONUS with a $99 order. I'm not CONUS, unfortunately.

By the way, the cutout of the stock terminal cup is probably 1.5"-2" in diameter. You won't be able to just put a Speakon in there as the hole is too big. You will need to either cut the appropriate sized hole and mount the Speakon in it, or buy a terminal plate and mount the speakon to it, cutting out the hole for the terminal plate around the already existing hole for the cheapie push-terminal cup. Wow, if I didn't already put together two "micro cabs" except without any of the technical knowledge, I would totally go with the responsible route and do this.

Speaking of, I might sell them... Hmm..

Oh wow, I missed the link; sorry about that. Heck yeah, that could work. Wish I saw that when I was ordering; I'd have went with your choice instead of a separate jack/plate. I still have to try and find the small bolts/nuts to mount the Speakon jack to the plate. PE didn't have any #4 bolts. I'm thinking 3 or 4mm bolts will work. They only have The Metric System Bolts where I'm at. It's a PITA sometimes.
 
Duke, great thread. While I'd probably build a box rather than buy one (just because I would enjoy doing it), it's cool to provide some DIY options for those who aren't tooled up for woodworking.

I used one of those Speakons like in post 71 for my DIY cab, and it eliminates the need for a jack plate.

My garage is a fair weather friend, but I hope to sell some gear this summer, and maybe I'll build one of these for club gigs on upright bass.

how do you guys think this may work? the cab may be a bit small, but like it sits its a sealed-back cab and could be left as-is or ported if need-be. plus it's orange!
 
I asked. First page, near the top. Ya'gotta read all the posts, my friend. ;) It'll be a crossover of some kind. Few caps, resistors and maybe a coil. But that will add to the cost and complexity. Depending on how good/bad it sounds, stock will determine it's success and popularity. MHO.

This cab won't break any records or your wallet. I'm sure it'll be "a nice little cab" for practice or coffeehouse gigs. Just like it's designer implied. I've needed a small combo amp for awhile; almost bought one of the Carvin MBs. Nothing else under $350-ish seemed worth it. Building a cab ATM is out of the question for me b/c I have no real tools. But this cab with my Shuttle 6.0 head could be a beautiful thing. Not including the outrageous shipping charges to me (I am not CONUS) this cab cost me $128.00. That includes everything except wire and female spade terminals. That money bought: Cab (which comes covered already), driver, jackplate, Speakon jack, screws for all parts, grill & grill clamp ears, corners, feet, handle. And it's a good driver too. Big question is how well it will like the .9cf box with that size vent. We'll see how it all shakes out.
 
Thud! If a man w/a fEARful is jazzed by thought of a CHEAP, nifty little DIY cab, surely the rest of you folks must be a bit curious? I mean, it's $120-ish and you get to build something with your hands (for the most part). Give in to your inner DIY Ninja. /this IS the cab you're looking for...
 
You're right, I checked and you did mention it, but a cross-over isn't usually designed to do something like that - it's usually designed to roll off the highs or lows to prevent the speaker from reproducing something it's not designed to do. This has way too much ripple for a simple x-over solution...
