Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Passinwind suggested 500w @ 8 ohms, which I have exactly, as a starting point. I am sure you'll be fine.

Cool to see you guys getting these cabs in now.

I've tried bridging both a PLX 1802 and my old 2402 into my 15/6/1 cab a few times. Works great, but prolly overkill for most. I'm guessing that Eden will be a nice match. 4mal has one and we've been meaning to try it out with my cabs. A PLX 1804 also works very well for those inclined to biamp...;)

I am thinking about moving to a Carvin DCM1540L or a Peavey IPR DSP 1600 if I go back to pre/power :)

I find myself wishing every other day that EA would put out a preamp. I might just use my IAmp as a preamp if I need more juice :P

Yours is going to look like a chubby cyclops ;) It should be darned nice though man. I go back and forth on the depth thing but I can see the appeal of having a bit deeper cab (feels a bit more stable).

That's funny 'cause I kinda look like a chubby cyclops.

I'll be adding 3.5" slide out Infinity casters to the cab with about 5" of height added overall. It's going to be nice to take the back casters out in tight situations.

This cyclops cab is coming in at 50lbs.

The 18Sound mid driver has puh-lenty of top end content...but, it's a different flavor than a horn would deliver.
It would be nice to be able to add (or turn off) the top end sheen the horn provides.

I don't believe the shorter LDS design cab I have would support adding a horn, let alone the mega sized bell that the latest GB versions have.

The big horn flare we're playing with is for the 6, not the tweeter. The JBL tweeter flare in GB's latest rev. isn't all that huge.

There are a raft of smaller, cheap horn flares that'll work pretty well, and you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune on the compression driver. The $55 bullet tweeter I used in my 15/6/1 cab stays on all the time, FWIW. But a switch for it is probably next on my list, now that I've updated the crossover yet again. :help:

Just got word from Don - he said he was really impressed with the evenness of the cab and that it went almost as low as a 212-LF he's got so that's pretty awesome :)

It's shipping today and I'll have words next week I am sure.

huh...well ok then!
thanks for the correction.

Mine’s done woo hoo! Spoke to Don today and mine is all done and ready to be tested. It is Greenboy’s design with Passinwind”s x-over and it has a tweetazoid. Don’s gonna call back later with the shipping $ and should be able to get it on its merry way tomorrow.

fEarB (sp?) is a slightly larger version of Greenboy's 15/6 - roughly 135 litres versus the original 108 (ish). It's tuned a bit lower for people playing below AO.

109 liters versus 150+ liters if I recall. And the fEaRB (notice caps for ERB, folken - Extended Range Bass) is tuned lower so that basses with E0 or F#0 tunings are really able to leverage the lower content the fat strings deliver... The 15/6 is optimized for A0 and B0 tunings but it does better with #F0 low content than probably 99% of the commerical bass cabs out there. So 15/6 actually sounds great for F#0 too (though not E0 IMO), but just a little more octave-and-fifth overtone and a little less octave overtone.

The fEaRB is a fairly big box, but nothing else gets those fat string notes like that!

Here is the first LDS 15/6.5 based on Greenboy's design, with approximate 800hz crossover (versus the 1.3K crossover).

This is RSands cab and will ship out today or tomorrow.

It's a beautiful sounding cab, and the form factor is just GREAT (congratulations Greenboy on a very nice design all the way around), and to Don for an expert execution and typically great fit and finish.

Does this cab have a biamp/full range switch for utilizing a Speakon 1+,1-/2+,2- config?

Mine does not. I originally considered having a switchable set of biamp inputs but I wouldn't use the normal biamp wiring personally - just have two separate inputs. Reason being not many amps can do that type of biamp - some good quality power amps is about it. GK does but GK's biamping is unsuitable for this cabinet.

I am thinking if I decide to go to a DSP type rig I would put a new plate in with two speakons, one high and one low.

Yeah, more curious than anything, although a GK 800RB would work in biamp mode.

I'm still breaking in my cab, but I thought I'd go ahead and post some initial thoughts as well as some pics to prove that it exists. :D

These comparisons are at lower volume comparing my LDS to my Avatar B410 NEO. All settings on the amp and my bass were the same through the different cabs. The attenuator on the LDS was set at around 10:30 o'clock. EQ was set flat on the Pro Bass 500 head. The Avatar is 4 ohms, and the LDS is 8 ohms. The PB500 head puts out 350 watts @ 4 ohms and 200 watts @ 8 ohms. My Yamaha BB3000MA was used, and it's a P/J configuration. Volume and Tone were dimed.

In short, the LDS has more definition/clarity and more low end warmth. Even though the head was pushing less wattage through the LDS, it also had more apparent volume than the 410 to my ears. While the LDS had more low end warmth and presence, that does NOT mean it sounded boomy. Far from it IMO.

P pickup solo - Same observations, and the Avatar sounded a bit more harsh.

J pickup solo - The LDS really did a great job with that Jaco sound. Again, more clarity.

Harmonics - Again, the LDS just had more clarity.

Dropped D - LDS wins again. Oh yeah!!! :hyper:

I can't wait to see how this LDS handles more power!!! :bassist: :help:
