Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Woo-hoo! Got my LDS ab today! Same one that is reviewed in this thread!!

Can't comment on SPL's or crossover points. Nope. Don't know nuttin' about any of dat. BUT, this is one darn fine sounding cab. Just played it a few minutes this eve and dug it with the tweeter dimed. (All the way!) Didn't sound harsh to me at all. (But I've been playing a Berg HT112 for a couple of months now. The ol' ears are used to that mid-punch thing.)

Can't wait for this weekend. I play a couple of outdoor shows (hope it doesn't rain) and an indoor show in about the worst room for me. The little HT12 worked better than any cab in this particular room. We'll see how the LDS cab does. I figure the LDS will sound really, really, really freakin' good outdoors.

Now, should I off the LMII for a more powerful amp??? :help: :D I bet the LDS opens up with a little power behind it.

Oh, yeah. It's louder than it might first appear nearby since it's not giving as many "speaker distortion" cues as full-range/two-way cabs do, but out on the floor its obviously a lot more present in the mix than close-by would indicate - and you can make it really really really loud with a pro big-wattage separates setup or say something like the Puma 1000 behind it.

There's no real standard design. I think up 'til a few months ago Don's 156 cab's had round ports @ 24"w x 24"t x 16"d to fit large tube amps. There's some pics of the one Ken tested.

He understands fully the capability of this next generation 15" (thank you GB) and builds the cab accordingly.

I would say no. It's the right size with the right drivers, and a pretty good crossover. Still better than 99.9% of the bass cabinets out there. With your BX1200 it will shame any 6x10 on volume (and tone and dispersion).

Also that business about slot ports giving you more low end sounds like voodoo to me - I bet if you crank them up to maxspl no one's going to notice (because they'll be too busy clutching their ears and bleeding).

It's probably a hearing with your eyes phenom. Ports tune the box, and they either promote or minimize chuffing. Their output is almost entirely in a range the ear is very unsensitive to, and when their contribution is separated from the rest of the musical content it becomes obvious you are hearing pretty much nothing but a low sine wave. This ties in with the port placement debate too.

OK. After a little internet connection problem, here are the pictures.

I'm digging this cab with the 6" driver wide open. Cuts but is not abrasive. The cab seems VERY sensitive to any EQ. Just a little turn of a knob on my LMII produces a big difference in tone. The real test comes this weekend, though. Stay tuned....

Beautiful cab, too. I might have Don make me a "regular" speaker grill. I'm afraid that loading in/out after a long day/gig the vintage style grill will get ripped. Tired = Clumsy.

Can't stop wondering what a power amp bridged into this thing would sound like!! :eek:

Yeah I do not think that is a 3015LF unless something changed. I bet you will find it is a B&C if you take the jack off and shine a flashlight in there. Nothing wrong with that, since B&C puts out a few 15's that are comparable to the 3015LF (at twice the price).

3015 does have ribbed cone after all, but they are pretty subtle unless you flash them just right. Those are likely the contributor toward the enhanced upper mids.

3015LF, never seen one yet that did. Wouldn't be any reason to go that route, either. It already was right for the job.

EDIT: Maybe for an ad campaign though: "3015LF - now WITH RIBS! Increase your PLEASURE!!!"

Mystery over. Pulled the speaker.

It's the Kappalite 3015. Non-LF.

I really don't care if it's LF or not. I really dig the cab and the tone. IMO, knowing that it's the non-LF, the 3015LF probably wouldn't work for me. The tone of this cab is deep and punchy. Plenty of mids. And, for my ear at least, the 6" and the 15" don't seem to compete with each other at all. (Though, to be honest, my ear is not to sensitive. An A/B comparison would be needed.)

I thought Don said it was a LF? No matter. I probably heard him wrong.

Hey: A 3015LF loaded sub cab. Would that work for a stack with my current 15/6 N-LF (Non-LF)?

It'd work fine as long as it was low passed around 1000hz or so. Otherwise it'd probably give you some weird on-axis/off-axis mid burps.

I'd email don and make sure you're getting what you wanted. As long as you're happy that's great - the 1300hz crossover Don is using actually is way more suitable to the 3015 than the 3015LF so I see no problem with that design. the 3015 can stand a bit smaller box, but not a big deal.
