Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

If you have the internal volume I think you have, get the LF if that's what you ordered. It was probably a mistake, as from the back the drivers look the same and if you have a few around things could happen... Anyway. Believe me, there is no advantage to using the 3015 in a larger box when you have the 6ND410.

Without even listening to it I can say: The 3015LF is a superior driver and the 18 sound 6nd410 beats the crap out of the Ht115's tweeter. I'm sure the 115 is a fine cab but if the 115/6 doesn't dominate it in every conceivable spec then I am a monkey's uncle.

rpsands, with all due respect, that's the same answer you gave me to the same question and you are probably right. Whether or not it is your intent, however, your repsonse appears to be pre-empting other responses.

Your response is also not based, of course, on an actual A/B listening comparison. I'll bet everyone who has regularly posted to this thread has been burned in the past by making assumptions based on specs alone or on separate recollections.

Once more, for Ukiah Bass and myself, has anyone actually performed an A/B listening comparison between the LDS 15/6.5--regardless of which 3015, which mid-driver and which crossover--and the Bergantino HT115? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Thanks in advance.

PM Ken Jung - he might have some time in with both. I'm leary of "bests" because then we walk in the land of the subjective where all opinions possible are held by one or another for personal "my tone" reasons, but I do know that a lot of performance indexes such as mechanical power handling etc are in favor of the 15/6 which is a very flexible sounding cab that to me sounds great in jhust about any situation with any type of rational EQing.

If Ken can provide opinions based on an A/B listening comparison, I'd love to hear them. I can't imagine Ken providing comments that are no more articulate than "bests". He is as capable as anyone here of describing differences, which are all that I'm seeking, without making value judgments about them.

I completely understand why the 15/6.5 should outperform an HT115 on a number of performance indices; but at some point, don't speaker cabinets have to be subjected to listening tests, i.e., "walk in the land of the subjective"? Fer cryin' out loud, all of music is subjective! I understand the numbers; but I've also, over time, been able to calibrate my own tonal preferences to the comments and reports of a few members like KJung and Tom Bowlus.

If you rely solely on specs and avoid listening tests, it seems to me you're doing what my economics professer always said he did: seeking and finding real-world phenomena to test whether they work in theory.

I'd PM Kjung; but I'll bet there are others who would also be interested in a report based on a listening test. If you're able to do such a comparison, Ken, would you post it here for all to read? Frankly, this apparent rush to squelch a request for a simple A/B comparison report, or relegate it to the private message board, comes off a little protective and paranoid to me. That does LDS, greenboy and Jim Bergantino all a disservice.

Can anyone make a tone/performance comparison to the Bergantino HT115? Thank you.

The HT115 is very nice but can't handle anywhere near as much power in the lows and at full blast I suspect you'd need two to keep up with a well designed 3015LF/6.5 cab. Different tone through the mids, more traditional and less articulate and punchy, more extended top from the tweeter. A sweeter sounding but less bombastic beast!

Bluesy Soul,

Kinda busting my balls there. I said "subjective" but gave context along with it, as in "everybody likes something and it's not always the same."

I did mention Ken though, because he always qualifies his statements and makes it clear to most who read that he is not a final arbiter of personal tastes, and he has lots of experiences with lots of cabs, fine ears and well-spoken observations.

Hey guys. I only have some 'music store' time in on the HT115 when there was a used one at Low Down Sound, and that was a few years ago. So, I can't really even pretend to A/B on volume performance and absolute low end.

The HT115 is a nice cab, and I remembered it was HEAVY. So, that's one big difference. It also had that very large horn type tweeter (at least large relative to most two way bass cab tweeters), and it seemed to be crossed over a bit lower than the typical 2 way cab tweeter (every Berg cab I've owned has been this way, where Jim seems to overlap the lower range of the horn and upper range of the driver a bit. So, what I can say is that the upper mids have a different, more 'hi fi' character, and that the treble has more of that 'horn type sheen' to it versus the upper mids and treble coming out of that big mid driver on the 15/6.5.

Many really dig the HT115, and it did, from my memory, have that 'signature' type of Berg tone that his early HT line had... big low end, relatively polite/relaxed mids, and a very hi fi sheen up top. In that sense it's almost the mirror image of the 15/6.5, which to my ear has a big but much tighter, more controlled low end, very even response from the low mids through the low treble, and not much sparkle up top (unless, I guess you add a tweeter).

Hope that helps. Not many HT115's around, so this is probably a bit of a moot comparison.

Hey Alex! It seems we are saying about the same thing.

You haven't been around here in a bit.

I FINALLY was able to try one of Greenboy's cabs executed by Don with a 'Passinwind inspired' crossover at, I think, about 800hz. Very, very, very nice!!!!! I again hope to hear your execution sometime.

well that's trippin me out
cause i'm sure he told me mine was 3015lf..

i won't be home to pull the speaker til friday.

Mystery over. Pulled the speaker.

It's the Kappalite 3015. Non-LF.

I really don't care if it's LF or not. I really dig the cab and the tone. IMO, knowing that it's the non-LF, the 3015LF probably wouldn't work for me. The tone of this cab is deep and punchy. Plenty of mids. And, for my ear at least, the 6" and the 15" don't seem to compete with each other at all. (Though, to be honest, my ear is not to sensitive. An A/B comparison would be needed.)

I thought Don said it was a LF? No matter. I probably heard him wrong.

Hey: A 3015LF loaded sub cab. Would that work for a stack with my current 15/6 N-LF (Non-LF)?

I said exactly what I meant. The specs are all superior. That doesn't neglect the necessity of subjective tone stuff or preempt such analysis.

I've never once been burned by making an analysis based on accurate specs, which the fEarful provides (unlike basically every other cabinet out there).

I can tell you this about power:
My walkabout, which is typically plenty, doesn't feel good with this cab. with two of them, at four ohms, it would.
the F1 is better, and workable.
The M6...well, this cab is the first cab that feel like the M6 didn't have enough power.
the wt800b, bridging 1200 watts into feels very good.

if i was still a pre/power guy, i wouldn't hesitate to bridge 1600 watts of qsc/plx 1602 into it.

Woo-hoo! Got my LDS ab today! Same one that is reviewed in this thread!!

Can't comment on SPL's or crossover points. Nope. Don't know nuttin' about any of dat. BUT, this is one darn fine sounding cab. Just played it a few minutes this eve and dug it with the tweeter dimed. (All the way!) Didn't sound harsh to me at all. (But I've been playing a Berg HT112 for a couple of months now. The ol' ears are used to that mid-punch thing.)

Can't wait for this weekend. I play a couple of outdoor shows (hope it doesn't rain) and an indoor show in about the worst room for me. The little HT12 worked better than any cab in this particular room. We'll see how the LDS cab does. I figure the LDS will sound really, really, really freakin' good outdoors.

Now, should I off the LMII for a more powerful amp??? :help: :D I bet the LDS opens up with a little power behind it.

However, I wouldn't know an 'LF' from a non 'LF' if it fell on me!

I'm sure you would. Depending on the height of the drop the stiffer cone of the LF could bounce off whilst the thinner ribbed cone of the non-LF could tear concentrically so you end up with it affixed firmly around your scalp in a way that any avant-garde milliner would be proud of.

Is the 15/6 an 8-ohm or 4-ohm cab, and how much power can it handle? Couldn't find any specs on the LDS website. Are all these cabs custom made? Anyone know the lead time. Thanks for comments by all!
