Thanks. I've considered going over to the shop one day and recording clips with my bass with all 3 types of pickups, but I figured with my less than stellar playing it wouldn't really be worth it.
Beav, that's your call man but honestly the playing is plenty fine in your clips. The idea is to hear the tonal difference in any case, and with that in mind what might be most helpful is to just let notes from open strings and different parts of the fretboard really ring out for awhile.
Busy playing makes it tough to gauge tonal differences, vs. just a very long whole note where you can really tune into the depth of the tone and hear the complete attack and decay. So much in the fingers/attack can affect tone that the more fingers are involved the less the listener can really know what's coming from the player and what's possibly happening due to the hardware.
That's why human playing with eyes wide open and cash already paid out for the gear, when used to gauge supposed differences in bridges, string-through, cables, etc. is such a load of total rubbish.
On the other hand, arguably nothing has a greater impact on tone overall than the pickups (and strings, and relative spacing of the two). Beyond obvious things such as spacing to the bridge and type & strength (output) of pickup, the spacing between pickup and string is a *major* factor. It's much more important to get that exact than fancy playing. Even then, if the output is much different it'll be tough to tell what's a richer inherent sound vs. something sounding richer due to higher output.
So, it ain't easy, and the playing is the least important thing I suggest.
That said, if someone could do it, it'd be a real service to buyers and builder alike. And the factors I listed above won't matter too much if there's a definite clear difference between the pickups, which I presume there is given they're humbckers vs. single coil. We can then simply hear what that difference actually is.
