Here are my current LEJs... That PJ looks strangely familiar. LOL Ah, That purple LEJ 5 with the mirror pickguard used to be mine. I do miss it!

The sound of the bass and I have a love/hate relationship. The sound, to me, is pretty dry. I don't know if that makes sense. It's a very clean and articulate bass. The high end is a bit sizzly for me. I think my resentment lies in the fact that it shows off my less than perfect technique. On the Love side, however, with the treble set flat and the tone knob rolled off a bit I can get an amazingly "in your face" jazz sound. Very Geddy Lee IMO. I'm thinking about adding a series/parallel switch to it.
Another thing I've noticed is that this bass does a pretty good P-bass impression. My favorite setting for the LowEnd is neck pickup at 75%, bridge at 25-50% ( not huge on the dominant bridge pickup sound). The volumes are rolled back a bit to attenuate the highs some...at least to my ears it works. Tone rolled off 30%-50%, treble set flat and bass boosted 10%-20%.
All in all I still really like my Lowend. I'm a Spector guy just because I love the tone and feel.
I get the dry/sizzly comment, in as much as that sound can be heard on a lot of the LEJ clips - the modern funk/slap stuff. But I don't think, for example, Ceasarbass' rockin' clips sound dry. It does sound like you know how to EQ the bass though, and I agree on the P impression - you're basically focusing the sound on a humbucker at the neck, so it makes sense. Spectors do sound different.

That's a rockin' church man ! If the church I went to growing up had any rockin' goin' on ... well I'd still be going. Might have been inspired to play better at a younger age too. Sounds great. Kudos.
Thanks SMASH!!! Its a great place to play and I'm very fortunate that the players are all great!! My LEJ has always been my "go to" bass since I got her. I really don't have to do much as far as eq'ing, basically cut or boost the highs or lows on the bass and set the eq flat on whatever rig I'm using. They are great basses, Brian and Chris have got a great formula with theses basses!!!
Thanks, I've owned 3 LEJs prior to this and I have a candy apple red ash body/maple board LEJ 4 coming within the next few weeks ...so yeah, I'm a huge fan of these.
Well, just giving the group here a heads up - I'm letting the purple one go, as many of you may have seen the ad in the classifieds. Basically, this beast is fantastic, but I've got my Atelier firmly entrenched in the "21 fret jazz" category. Therefore, Brian will be building me one very similar to this one, but in 24 frets (go to Lowend Basses and check out the 5 string gallery, look for a blue burst with a spalted maple top -

I was going to have my LEJ made in purple... but then I decided on gold. It looks even better now with standard j-bass knobs and a tortoise shell pick guard. Brian was extremely patient with me and created the perfect funk machine. Thanks again.
Mattrmurray that gold bass is so awesome ! I've long admired the look and the audacity it takes to think of it and actually get it built. Kudos.

It's an LEJ6. I thought of posting it in a different thread, maybe having people guess what bass(es) I was using. I'll bet some would have said "P Bass". At least until they heard the lower/higher strings. Not my desire to make people feel fooled though.
These are just random excerpts from audition clips with a new band. My first jam with them. Room recording, Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout combo, everything set generally flat with some passive tone roll-off on the bass and maybe slight active EQing here or there.
Pretty messy, but I got the gig. The vocailst was auditioning too, and I think she sounds pretty good considering she had no prep.
Anyway the guitarist and I had a laugh 'cuz he's got a Parker Fly and I've got an "exotic boutique" 6-string and we're playing this old-school toned music.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about the tone being right for the tunes, or to critique the playing. It's just meant to show the sound of these basses in a non-modern context & perhaps dispell the idea some people have that these are exclusively bright/modern/sizzly sounding which ain't usually my desired tone.

I just might have the best SC on the market LOLOLOL... actually I know I do, I've compared them to the best (see stock currently at the shop) as well as everyone that come in the shop, and have gotten their thoughts and opinions about them. I'm extremely excited to be able to offer both choices in the LEJ's for the Over the top Modern and now the true Vintage traditional tone. ( DISCLAIMER; I AM BIAS

JAKE TFBS, LOOK AT THE TOP OF THE HEADSTOCK AND YOU WILL SEE THE 6 DIGIT NUMBER. THE ORDER IS MONTH, YEAR AND DAY. ONCE YOU PLAY A LEJ, YOU WANT EVEN THINK ABOUT ANOTHER BRAND.
You stump me with that number. All of my basses haver six digit number. Hit Brian up at [email protected]. He can tell you when it was made and all the specs. Peace!
Well i contacted Brian and he replied quickly.
The bass was made on May 28th 2004.
This was the 2nd bass made and a prototype of the LEJ bass.
Its got custom Kent armstrong J pickups and John Suhr 3 band preamp.

I stopped by the shop today to check out the new single coil pickups. I'd talked to Brian over the phone about them and even though he mocked my southern grammar 
I decided they sounded right up my alley (70's dirty jazz tone). I plugged my bass in with the pickups in series to get a quick tone check. Then, I plugged in a bass with single coils. I played it about 15 seconds and decided I had to have them. I know to most people that's shady, but I totally trust in whatever product Brian puts out. He installed them for me and tomorrow I'll have a chance to check them out in full.
I'll report back.
