It is SWEET!!!!!!!!!! The color is really hard to capture, but you see some of the grain of the wood through the paint....
I will submit a full gig report this weekend, and I will post some quick recordings......

I just picked this up yesterday. It really is quite an amazing bass on many levels. Here are a few pics:

My first impression upon opening the bag....it's a VERY well-built jazz bass. I have had LOTS of jazzes over the years, as well as an LEJ from a few years ago. In fact, I believe I owned the first 4 string LEJ...an old tobacco burst with Sadowsky-like 1/2 guard. I picked it up at a NAMM show several years ago directly from Brian. Here's a pic:

Anyway, the bass has a couple of features I didn't think I would like; in fact, they are features I would NEVER order on a bass.
#1...mahogany body. Most mahogany bodied basses I've played lacked mid character, and had a scooped EQ-like sound to them.
#2 a 2 band preamp. Why the hell would you NOT have the mids on a preamp, especially on a jazz?
#3 humbucker j-style pickups. If it's a jazz, why not put single coils in? My plan was to put the LEJ singles in.
#4 the benevente preamp. I have had a couple of basses with the preamp in that I couldn't get my sound out of, which is a very bridge-heavy, Jaco influenced tone with a lot of mids, but with bass added. Essentially, Jaco on 'roids. I was thinking of swapping the pre out.

Well, I HAVE to apologize to Brian Barrett. I feel honestly, quite stupid. I got the bass yesterday, did a full setup on it, and decided to take it to my Friday night gig, which is a jazz quartet setting that plays almost every tune in the Real Book to old funk and R&B standards, to some hipper, newer style tunes. Well, I have to say........................



THE BASS KILLED. ALL NIGHT LONG. By using the 2 bands with the series switching on the pickups, I was able to get any tone I needed, and the sound cut through like a hot knife. The bass takes a deadly-low setup, so I was happily grooving all night long in total comfort, and when I took solos, I stood out with outstanding tone and presence.
The mahogany body has PLENTY of mids, and the character of the pickups which I didn't think I'd like (bright edge to the front of the sound) is what made me so audible out front! The preamp works like a charm....I just learned I need to think differently than I would if I was using a 3 band preamp. It was ME that needed to change! I have been a 3 band user for so long, I never thought I would have any use for a 2 band pre. Man, was I wrong! :rollno: All in all, I am digging this bass A LOT!!! I can't wait to play it again tonight at my trio gig!!!

My only "complaints"....
#1 The passive tone roll-off. I wish the cap was a higher value so I could roll a bit more highs off if needed.
#2 The pickguard....gotta change it out to aged white pearloid. Not a fan of tort on anything but burst or white, but that's my bag.

So, in short, I AM SORRY, BRIAN!!!! :D I'm digging your bass, your pre, your pickups, your haircut, (well, maybe not the haircut!) :p

Thanks so much to everyone for checking in the past couple days with phone calls and e-mails. We got power up a few hours. We are ok, but it just missed the shop, and I watched it go by and hit about a 1/2 mile down from the shop. Then it tore right down past our subdivision and destroyed all around us. Its unreal walking around, I have never first hand witnessed a tornado like this nor seen an area like this right after.... looks like a bomb went off...... its surreal ...... Its amazing all the customers/friends that have been calling and e-mailing me!

Sorry - Just saw your post. The hollowbody is actually the one without the fancy top - the other LEJ is placed alongside it to demonstrate the body thickness. It's an ash body with an ash cap. It's going to be finished in T-Burst and should have a good vibe about it.

I guess it could be called a hybrid in a way - it's got all of the classic jazz shaping/single coil pickups but with a larger resonant hollow body. The shape and design, along with string thru-body bridge will make it pretty unusual in the hollowbody world as far as I'm aware.

Thanks. I realized my mistake after posting. That sounds really cool ! Gutsty specs on your part, that being new ground for an LEJ (I think)? however Benavente has made some great hollowbodies from what I've read. Good luck with it.

LowBSix's burst looks very nice, and so does the snazzy red 5'er ... is that a Pao Ferro board on the red bass? Looks very light for rosewood.

The New Disc is completely done with an LEJ 5 & 6 and freltess 5.

I believe thats #1 LEJ proto-type. Its a 1/4 sawn maple finger board with vintage tint to the board and neck in gloss finish.
