Low End Jazz Megathread, post pics and soundbites!!

Well, I spent an evening playing this bass. It looks even nicer close up. Good low action, and easy to get along with straight away. It's a bit brighter than what I'm used to(AC LG5 and a bunch of Musicman basses), but once I get used to it I'm sure there will be lots of useable tones. It's also a case that the strings need to settle down. There are a couple of tunes in our set with some slapping and some which need a more modern tone, so it will be used for them.

All in all, very impressive. Good looking, quality finish, well set up and easy to play.

Anyone know what strings ship as standard with it? I'm thinking of slapping a set of DR Hi beams on it, will they work?

I'm pretty sure they're SIT "Rock Brite" stainless strings, which do have a lot of high end especially when new.

If you hear brightness, other than new strings consider the passive tone control and the fact that the highs are boosted a bit when set "flat" compared to the passive sound, IME.

Listen to it passive then set the active EQ so it sounss the same tonally, which should be a little back from center on the bass and something more than that back from the detent on the treble.

SIT Strings, Rock Brights or Power Steels.

Thanks, SMASH, that's really helpful. The brightness isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just not what I'm used to. The perfect antidote to the times I have wished the AC was less dark.

I'll have a mess around with the controls when I get home.

Darn work, while it allows me to buy wonderful instruments, it also keeps me away from playing them! I was thinking this on the train this morning. I started a new band a few months ago, and it's a daily struggle to find the time to learn the new tunes and get a setlist together so we can gig. My usual practice routine is right out of the window as a result. If I didn't work, I'd be able to learn the setlist and concentrate on the other areas of my playing I need to improve. However, I'd be living in a hole in the ground with a tarpaulin over my head, playing a rubber band strung along a broom handle! Life, don't talk to me about life. :hmm::D

Another thing which helped me was being in a big band, you know the swing type of stuff. It is all notated, so you have to work on it daily just to keep up. It really brings your reading on. The other thing, if you are in a cover band, when there are new tunes to learn, try to find the sheet music, don't learn them by ear, sit down with the music and learn it that way.

Forgot to mention, I really like the neck profile on my LEJ. The best profile I have ever found on a bass, for me, of course. Even nicer than my Alleva Coppolo. Wide but slim front to back. My hand falls into a natural position where the thumb is opposite my middle finger. This is an area of my technique I have been working on over the past few months. My tendency is to have the thumb opposite the index finger. The change is more natural on the LEJ.

The pickup position is a bit different. On my AC, I play a little behind the neck pickup, on the LEJ that is right over it. When I dig in I tend to hit it with the pads of my fingers. Again, no big deal, just something I need to adjust to. Can't wait to get home tomight.

Just got my LEJ today too. I was dying having it sitting there at work with me and not being able to play it all day! Messed around with it a a little tonight. My first reaction was similar to LiF's in that the first thing I noticed was the brightness. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the new SIT strings on there, and its not a bad thing at all especially considering my other bass is a Pedulla (Barts) and they tend to be a little darker in tone...plus with the tone and treble controls I can pretty much get whatever I want out of it. I was a little worried about the neck because I had heard that LEJs were really beefy, but it didn't bother me and all and feels very natural. I think the Mahogany body with the maple board is a great combo. Just like was stated earlier, it almost has a compressed sound too it. Overall it sounds GREAT in my bedroom. haha. Can't wait to try it out with the band!

Congrats! Try playing in the passive position on just the neck pickup when you're needing a 'P' tone....

I don't find the neck beefy at all. In fact for me it is slim and sleek. I love the string spacing and there are so many tone variables.... just keep messing with it..... I believe the LEJ and LEPJ has begun to get the recognition it deserves!

Okay, so I took the bass to rehearsal last night.

What can I say? Wow!

I'm really impressed.

Playing solo, I love the look of the bass and how it feels, especially the neck. However, the sound was just a bit too different to what I was used to. I was kind of wishing I had gone with the Alder/Rosewood combo. But, in the mix, it was fantastic. Deep and full and really cut through. It worked with pretty much everything we play. One of the tunes is "Think" by Aretha. I just turned the neck pickup all the way up, reduced the bridge and boosted the bass a little and it was a perfect tone. A very versatile bass. I'm very glad I picked that combination. My band mates, particularly the drummer, like the sound of it better than my AC LG5!
