Low Noise Fan For SVT-AV

Ampeg doesn’t go with the best fans. Google the part number of the fan that is in there, find the specs. You want one about the same air flow rate that the cooling system was designed for, just quieter. Look at EBM-PAPST fans at electronic distributors such as mouser or newark.

Thanks for the reply! I usually see the Sunon SF11580A-1083HBL.GN listed as the replacement for OEM, but I'm not sure if this is actually the OEM part. The noise rating is 36.5 DBA. The EBM-PAPST 8500N looks comparable and has a noise rating of 34 DBA. Is that a huge difference? Theres also the EBM-PAPST Link Removed which pushes significantly less air but is much quieter at 21 DBA.

There’s always tradeoff. Often a quieter fan is more expensive. A lot goes into fan design. You have to be careful with less airflow. Noise isn't just about the fan specs, how the air flows within the chassis can also make noise. Also, how the fan is mounted- rubber vibration mounts can make it quieter.

As an example, I’ve used this one (4530Z) in SVT vintage and VR models. It’s older and there may be better choices now: MTI SVT Fan Replacement. This is a larger sized fan and will not fit in the AV.

As for fan levels, a 30dbA level is 16th that of a 70dbA. 32 is very quiet. 20 dba is considered ultra-quiet. Just remember, it will be a bit louder when installed in the amp.

AFAIK the AV uses same size 80mm fan as the CL, so this one is too big.

I bought a fan from Parts Express and mounted in my CL with 4 little rubber grommets and it meets all specs and is quiet. I keep meaning to post pics and will try to do so this weekend.
BTW, carefully remove the black decal on the center of the fan blade to install on the new one to hide all the type face (assuming a VR is like a CL).

Which one, looking to replace the OEM jet engine in my newly acquired SVT-AV SLM 2005?

I'll see if I can figure out which one. I did try to look up my order before but must have made a mistake.
Fan still works well and is quiet (for what it is and much quieter than a worn out stocker)

Think this through thoroughly, I just worked on an amp where a "tech" replaced a fan and didn't to a proper job. A wire came loose and took out an entire power amp module (in addition to other tech caused damage). Amp is now an (expensive) unrepairable paperweight.

Not quite the same on your amp, but the general caution still holds true.

I found the specs online or from another board member.
I've recorded SVT's many times in the studio and I don't waste time dealing with the fan.
Just put the head in the storeroom, bathroom, control room, whatever.
A tightly gobo'd space may not offer enough fresh air for a long day.

Unfortunately, no space adjacent to the man’s cave home studio… No useable space I mean!

There is still a DI out and I also have a Warm Audio active DI that accepts speaker level…
