Lowest string always sounds squashed

I forgot about my thread here a bit, honestly. I’ve been trying it with just the compressor (fast attack, slow release) and it sounder quite better in general. So it might’ve been bad EQ on the VT Bass etc.

For good measure I’ve restrung my Jazz bass with Power Slinkies (which always use for drop C) and made sure it was done properly. It’s a string through body so I made sure the ball-ends weren’t against the ferrules yet, so it could move freely until gets to a decent tension level.

Tested the strings acoustically and they all had good sustain, at least 30-35 seconds until they become inaudible. Another problem that might occured with the previous ones is that the E-string might’ve went dull just from being in the case (apparently that can be a thing too). So time will tell.

The VT Bass DI still sounds quite awful, even with the knobs all at 12.

To clarify again, the signal chain is: bass - tuner - compressor - VT Bass DI - Focusrite 2i2 (with Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohm headphones)

Will test other strings too in the near future that could potentially take a lot of time to get dull and perhaps more use of a string cleaner.

Are you talking about hearing your bass all on its own thru the VTB?

The magic of the VTB is in how it helps your bass sit in a live band mix. I've had my VTB for almost 10 yrs as my main tone-shaping tool and never thought my bass sounded awful. ;)
Yea, kinda. In conjuction with my MXR M87 comp (I need that one lol). Could be that the drive of the VT Bass DI also contributes in an awful sound so far. That thing seems a really sensitive bugger.
