Lyrics that speak to you.

Leonard Cohen. All of his lyrics are just amazing to me. I have a special place in my soul for "Bird on the Wire:"

Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.

If I, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.

Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.

But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
he said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
she cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

Oh like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Besides him, Roger Waters and Paul Simon are awesome.

I usually listen to sounds and then words. Like, I need to be well-acquainted with the music before the lyrics start to hit me. Not always, but usually.

I lost my wife very recently... and the jazz standard.. "You don't know what love is" resonates like nothing else...

You don't know what love is
'Til you've learned the meaning of the blues
Until you've loved a love you've had to lose,
You don't know what love is.
You don't know how lips hurt
Until you've kissed and had to pay the cost,
Until you've flipped your heart and you have lost,
You don't know what love is.
Do you know how a lost heart fears
At the thought of reminiscing,
And how lips that taste of tears
Lose their taste for kissing?
You don't know how hearts burn
For love that can, not live yet never dies.
Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes,
You don't know what love is.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

I never really could understand this.

I don't get that.

I often become a spoiled brat and wish I could stop working and just play music all day, every day... "Cygnus X-1, Book 2" from "Hemispheres" is an epic tale that reminds me how important balance is. "The Trees" and "2112" are brilliant as well.

Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts by Funakdelic:

Some excerpts:
You rise as high as your dominant aspiration
You descend to the level of your lowest concept of your self
Free your mind and your ass will follow...

The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers
Its nature is to respond to your thoughts
Be careful of the thought-seeds you plant in the garden of your mind
For seeds grow after their kind...

Good thoughts bring forth good fruit
******** thoughts rot your meat.
Think right, and you can fly
The kingdom of heaven is within:
Free your mind, and your ass will follow

I don't really listen to lyrics. I just hear the singer as another instrument. I don't even know many of the words to my bands originals.

I got on a Rush kick and listened to nothing but Rush for a few weeks. The lyrics are so awful I actually started listening to them. I love Rush but those are the most God-awful lyrics I've ever heard from a major band.
