Lyrics that speak to you.

"Two Coffins"

Two coffins for sleep.
One for you, one for me.
We'll get there eventually.

In the dark of our graves our bodies will decay.
I wish you'd never change.

How lucky I ever was to see
the way that you smiled at me.
Your little moon face shining bright at me.
One day soon there'll be nothing left of you and me.

Two coffins for sleep.

Two coffins for sleep.

All the things I have yet to lose will someday be gone too.
Back into annihilation.
All things will fade, maybe it's better off that way.
I wish you'd stay with me.

My girlfriend played me this song the first day we ever spent together, and since then it's become my favorite. I almost don't like to listen to it because of how powerful of an effect it has on me, but at the same time I absolutely love it for that very reason. I can't possibly listen to it without thinking about us.

Speaking of Joni Mitchell, I think my favorite single line of all time is:

They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot

another winner, but she has a lot of profound (or at least they seem profound) and interesting lyrics. ladies of the canyon (the one with the song you listed and the one i did) has been one of my favorite albums for... wow, for decades, actually.

I'm a great fan of lyrics that are both intellectual and emotional.

Now, I get why one would consider Neil Peart's "sci-fi" lyrics awful; they're technically great but not neccessarily very emotional to those of use who live here and now. However, the later Rush is really amazing. Personally I'm very partial to the lyrics on "Presto" and "Clockwork Angels". They really speak about what it is to be human.

But my personal favourite is certainly Al Stewart. Never a trite rhyme, always unusual words that seem perfectly natural in his songs. And the topics range from the rather personal to ones about Warren Harding or Thomas More.

And "Sand in your Shoes" from the "Year of the Cat" album gets me every time. Not sure why:

You always were a city girl
Though you were country raised
And back in some forgotten time
We shared the cold north days
But the simple life was not your style
And you just had to escape
Now it's goodbye to my lady of the islands.

On Remembrance Day the bands all played,
The bells pealed through the park
And you lay there by the "Do Not" signs,
And shamed them with your spark
Now winter moans in old men's bones
As the day falls into dark
And it's goodbye to my lady of the islands

It was just like this

Behind the kisses you so soon swept away
Oh I always knew
That some day you'd
Be bound to just get pulled away

The summer sun beats on and on,
The shops swim in the heat
And you're standing by the traffic signs
With taxis at your feet
Oh I know that in your city skin
You're feeling more complete
So it's goodbye to my lady of the islands

No I never got the letters
That you said you'd send me
So it's goodbye to my lady of the islands

I am very into lyrics so there are hundreds I could choose from...

Radio Head - There's always a siren singing you to a shipwreck

Not a huge Floyd fan but love this - Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'till their Judgment day comes, yeah!

Yellow air
Yellow clouds
Blowin' down down down the fairway
Sensitive to the touch
Mowin' down the putting green
Heading straight for the big clubhouse
Where the stuffed country club
Effervescent ladies, so carefree
Relax, pose by the pool
Limber limp with a dry martini
Until...
