So, is it just the extremes (heel and toe) of normal expression pedal or can you put totally different preset to it? For example fuzz face when expression led is on and phaser when led is off?
Another question inspired by my gig last night- my guitarist lost all of the settings on the M13 in the middle of a set. he doesn't know if he did something wrong, or if it glitched out. can the setting be saved in an external source (memory stick, computer, etc)?
Yes, scenes can be backed up, via MIDI, to your computer.
what kind of file is it backed up as? a specific line 6 program, a music program, etc?
i just tried the M13 at a music store and i really liked it... a lot. a tone-freak guitarist in a band that i am in has one and loves it, especially after the software update. before i sell off my other pedals, i wanted to ask about the quality of the pedal-
i have a DL4 and, while sounding great, it works intermittently (always failing in the studio and on stage, not in rehearsal). Line 6 customer support told me that i was out of luck regarding support and referred me to a private electronics store, where they said (over the phone) that they see a fair number of problems w/ Line 6 pedals, adding that it is almost the cost of a new pedal to replace. the M13 seems like it is built better than the DL4, MM4, DM4, etc... is it?
what kind of midi controller would one use to control the looper?
how does one go about updating the software (programs, cables, etc)?
so i took tayste's suggestion and have looked over the book several times... it's a great reference, it cleared up some stuff, but I still don't have too good of an idea about these questions... so, bump.

It kicks butt for Bass. Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Ronda Smith are using one. As well as Alex Al and Chris Roy. Lots of good stuff in there for us.
I love the Boost Comp to push my SVT sound on my Studio 110.
Also, working on getting a Bass Octaver in the next update because of this website.
M13 is built WAY better than the XX4 pedal's I bought a DM4 when I got the M13 as a backup (until the M9 was released) and was shocked about how shoddy the knos were on it. I've had mine for months and I've easily done over 30 gigs with it and probaby near 100 practices with it, not had a single problem with it, but I will say get a case for it. Don't carry it round in a plastic bag and then wonder why you cracked a screen or broke a knob off.
Any midi controller will work with the M13 assuming it sends the right channel and program changes, you could even use a keyboard if you wanted. I once considered have one of these

To do all sort of shoegazer knob twiddling but then I found you can control so much with expr's I didn't both. But for the Looper I though the Tech 21 Midi Moose had just the right number of controls, but really you can access a lot of things while still in looper mode, I don't know why you would want one. But really the answer is any of them, Tech 21, GCX, Axess etc.
Software use midiox or sysex, basically any program that will send midi sysex files, so Midiox for PC and Sysex for OSX, and get something like a M-audio Uno or anything else that looks like this.

Hope this answers everything
brassmaster from bass pod xt
bddi clone from bass pod xt
bass synth from the Low Down series
Oh I forgot about one last thing on my small list of wishes for the M9/M13, might as well list my full list:
brassmaster from bass pod xt
bddi clone from bass pod xt
bass synth from the Low Down series
The last one was just added to "my list". The low down bass synth sounds very, very nice.
