Mac Audio Upgrade?

Currently I run an Apogee Jam into a Mac (Mainstage 3) and out that directly to a Sansamp RBI and so on. I'm looking for a way improve the output from the Mac. Perhaps a DAC or something. The Apogee Gio is a little out of reach right now. Even though everything sounds more or less okay as is, I'm having trouble with the idea that a crummy mini output jack is ultimately feeding a 1000 watt power amp. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The size of the connector has nothing to do with the quality (or quantity) of the sound.

It certainly does affect the sound. The headphone outputs of modern macs are a disaster. Hook a pair of studio monitors to the analalogue of output of a recent iMac and marvel at the r2d2 like tones as you move your mouse. I thought it might be cleaner running through the USB to a motu unit, nope. I ended up having to route it into a fibre optic da converter to get it quiet.
