"With advances in technology and collecting of big data, then it may be that it will become easier to do. However, very quickly you start eliciting complaints about 'fairness'."
Unless you're taking steps to prevent cookies and scrub all your browsing history, if you browse some item on macys.com and then look at the same thing on amazon.com, amazon probably "knows" you've been looking at that item and may adjust the price accordingly.

Needed a new winter coat. There's a Macys nearby and my wife had a 25% off coupon.
Saw 2 great Tommy Hilfiger jackets on sale for 60% off! Regular price $250 and $225. Score. I can't decide, and my wife likes them both so she says she'll buy me the other. I love my wife. Anyhow... They tell us they can't take the 25% off because the jackets were already discounted. 60% off is still a great deal! We bought them.
Without getting into the math, cuz math is hard - I decided this time to research what I bought. Price on Amazon, without any sale - was cheaper than Macy's sale price!
I just re-orderd both jackets on Amazon for $40 less! Macys is getting theirs back tomorrow.
This kind of crap really gets to me for some reason. BS advertising/marketing. It should be against the law. I'm done with Macys.
It's retail Darwinism. Is it any wonder so many people (myself included) shop this way routinely?

I just did a little grocery shopping. The receipt says "You saved $7.88 today!" (they don't even use loyalty cards so it's not that). It says the bottle of wine was $5 off. Um, no, the shelf price of $10.99 is within about 50 cents of every other store. The $3.99 english muffins for $1.99? "You saved $2!" Except everybody charges $1.99 for those english muffins.
I must admit I love tapping groceries into the WalMart app and picking them up while a cheerful kid loads them up for me curbside. Other than fresh stuff at the farmer's market at a couple of other grocery stores (just the produce sections) I haven't browsed the aisles in weeks.

Waiting for the Amazon delivery before making the return. I haven't checked shipping (it's not a bass ya know), but I think they're coming tomorrow cuz I have Prime. That doesn't always mean ya get when they say you will.

I do think many retailers are getting away with price scamming. There used to be a law in California that retailers could not advertise "50% Off" or whatever unless they could document that the item had actually retailed at the higher price for some stated period of time. Something like that.

Some companies, ones with integrity, still do that.
I'm hoping to do a book deal with BookBub (they're not easy to get, so my fingers are tightly crossed). One of the requirements for submission is that the price we offer our book for has to be at least (I think) a 60% discount, and they check to see that we haven't changed the price over the last 90 days. If we did, it ain't happening.

I went to Staples today for a dry erase board. I saw it on their web site for $16.99 and it indicated my local store had one in stock. I got to the register and handed over the board and $3.99 worth of markers and my total was over $40.00. I asked the lady at the register what the board cost and she said it scanned at $33.99. I told her nevermind I'd just order one from their webpage for $16.00. Without missing a beat she said no problem, we always price match our web site.
